MUSEUM FEATURED ON UNC-TV

The rescue and reconstruction of the Museum of The Albemarle’s c. 1755 Jackson House will be featured on UNC-TV’s Our State show on November 1, 2007 at 8:00 pm. The story is the result of over a year of taping and interviews by UNC-TV crews and museum staff. The segment features construction progress of the Jackson house, the anchor of the Museum’s second floor main gallery and a key part of “Our Story:” the history of the Albemarle region. Reconstruction and assembly of the Proctor smokehouse, an early 19th century log-plank smokehouse is also featured along with interviews with Curator Tom Butchko, Restoration Carpenter Russell Steele, and Restoration Specialist Reid Thomas, from the North Carolina State Historic Preservation’s eastern office and the Museum staff. Both the Jackson House and the Proctor smokehouse interpret the lives of many ambitious Albemarle farmers during the late colonial and early federal periods.

Check your local TV listings for channel information.

The Museum of the Albemarle is located at 501 South Water Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Serving Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington counties, the museum is the northeast regional history museum of the North Carolina Division of State History Museums. Rose Buddy founder Fearing dead at 93

Friday, October 19, 2007

Fred Fearing, internationally famous as founder of Elizabeth City?s Rose Buddies, died at Albemarle Hospital this morning. He was 93.

Pat Ruth, Fearing?s daughter, said her father died in his sleep. He had been at the hospital for a minor procedure but otherwise was feeling well, she said.

Fearing, a retired mail carrier, gained international acclaim for cofounding a group of greeters in the early 1980s who welcomed visiting boaters to Elizabeth City. The name originated from Fearing?s practice of issuing roses to visiting female boaters.

Thousands of boaters around the world had met Fearing, primarily through the wine and cheese parties he held in their honor during boating season at Elizabeth City?s waterfront. The good will Fearing showed boaters raised the city?s profile and attracted worldwide publicity. It also boosted tourism across the region.
