Toddler Time Features Winter Wonderland, January 17


Elizabeth City, NC — Port Discover’s Toddler Time presents "Winter Wonderland" on Thursday, January 17. Children will use their five senses to discover the world of winter. From touching to tasting to smelling, educator Wendy Pierce will guide children through an exploration of various winter items—including some snow!

The one-hour program for two and three-year-olds will begin at 9:30; the program for four-and-five-year-olds begins at 11:00 am. Cost for the program is $5.00 per family and reservations are required. Parents or guardians must accompany the child.

Port Discover is located at 613 East Main Street, Elizabeth City. Port Discover’s hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Programs can be arranged at other times for special groups. For more information call 252-338-6117 or www.PortDiscover.org.


Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

Hello everyone - we hope you all had fantastic holidays and enjoyed yourselves. Our wish is that you all enjoy a wonderful healthy and happy new year - there are so many great books out there to guide you into health, wealth and happiness - come see our healthy display in the store !!

A surprise for us - we recently started carrying Globes - this was a big hit over the holidays - we have large world globes and small tiltable desk top world globes and star gazer globes.

Calendars?? We've got them - and if there a particular one you are looking for that we don't have - we will order it for you - be prepared for the New Year with a great planner/calendar -

We are in the process of doing inventory - so many titles have been moved to our clearance section in the back of the store - great savings on great titles.

Alex Christopher Meekins the author of the Elizabeth City Civil war book made two appearances at our store - he was so nice and happy to come back to his fans !! It was his first signing and it was quite the success - we have plenty of his books in stock so just give a ring and we will be happy to hold one for you.

Bill Ferguson the author of Laughter on the River of Death - his book is being looked at for a possible movie - has gotten Rave reviews !!

Elizabeth City, North Carolina and the Civil War: A History of Battle and Occupation by Alex Christopher Meekins (The History Press, 2007). By 1862, Elizabeth City disappears from the story in most secondary works. This is the first book to document its history over the entire war. I didn't see an author bio inside the book, but I've been told Meekins works for the state archives & records division so he undoubtedly knows his stuff. read more...

Hide-N-Wood Gardens

Come and visit Hide-N-Wood Gardens!! The garden consists of eight raised beds and four elevated beds. Throughout the year, you can see demonstrations of intensified gardening techniques on small fruits and vegetables. In addition, portions of the garden have been designed as a Native Plant Habitat by NC NPS.

Hide-N-Wood Gardens will be open to the general public, daylight hours, from March 1st to November 30 2008. With emphasis on food production by persons with a physical or mental handicap.

Museum of the Albemarle's Pre-Schooler Time

Museum of the Albemarle will hold "Pre-Schooler Time" on Thursday, January 10, 2008 from 10:00 am until 10:45 am. Participants must be between the ages of 3 to 5 years old and must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-Schoolers will have the opportunity to discover how people made quilts. A craft activity will follow after touring the exhibit "Quilts—Patches of Time" and a short book reading.
