New York-Based Opera Singer and Recitalist to Give Benefit Concert for MOA

New York-Based Opera Singer and Recitalist to Give Benefit Concert for MOA

Praised for her full, lyric voice and solid technique, Rose Leahr Bowen is a New York-based opera singer and recitalist who has delighted audiences in roles such has "Mimi" in La Boheme, "Micaela" in Carmen, and "Clara" in Porgy and Bess. Now, residents of the Albemarle area will have an opportunity to hear this dynamic soprano in a benefit concert, entitled "Opera on the Pasquotank." The concert, sponsored by The Guild of Museum Friends, will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 7:00 PM at Museum of the Albemarle’s Gaither Auditorium. A Champagne reception with the artist will immediately follow the performance.

Bowen, a native of Columbus, Ohio, received a Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor of Arts degree in French Literature from Smith College. She has also performed solo recitals in Italy at Oratorio San Fillipo and the Associazione Italo-Americano in Genoa, and Chiesa de S. Francesco in Aqui Terme. Although Bowen has traveled to the Piedmont region of North Carolina, she has never visited the northeastern part of the state and is excited about the prospect. "I’ve heard so much over the years about the unique beauty of the area and its rich history," Bowen says. "I look forward to being introduced to one of North Carolina’s true gems."

Tickets for the concert and reception are $35 and will be available for purchase at Museum of the Albemarle and The City Wine Sellar, Bakery, Deli & Wine Bar in Elizabeth City. Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase audiovisual equipment and computers for MOA, which will help publicize upcoming events, play recordings of past lectures and programs, and televise artifact conservation work and exhibit installations.

REVIEW from Civil War Books and Authors - Blogged by Andrew Wagenhoffer

This is a part of a review by Andrew Wagenhoffer about Alex Christopher Meekins: "Elizabeth City, North Carolina and the Civil War":

The publisher has done a fine job as well; the paperback volume is sturdily constructed using quality materials and is handsomely illustrated. Written well and based almost exclusively on primary source materials, the book's strengths are abundant; however, several weaknesses are apparent. While notes indicate a deep level of original research, no bibliography or index are provided. read more...
