2010 COAST GUARD WEEK
AUGUST 1-7, 2010

Coast Guard Week is a weeklong celebration of the brave men and women who protect us on land, sea and air, and of their families.

Events:

All Week : Museum of the Albemarle – 501 South Water Street, Downtown Elizabeth City, 252-335-1453
(Tuesday-Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm; Sunday 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm; Closed Monday) OUT OF THE BLUE: COAST GUARD AVIATION Visit the Museum of the Albemarle and navigate two centuries of United States Coast Guard history from 1790 to its aviation presence in the Albemarle region today.

Tuesday, August 3 : All Day at The Pines at Elizabeth City – All active duty personnel with a valid military ID can play a free round of golf (tee times permitting) Call 252-335-0278 to reserve your tee time.

Welcome to Elizabeth City – An EXPO for Coast Guard Families Come out and meet the schools and organizations that can help make your life in Elizabeth City area easier and more fun.

Tuesday, August 3 : 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm - Museum of the Albemarle – 501 South Water Street, Downtown Elizabeth City
National Night Out: MOA Volunteers will be presenting spotlight tours with a special focus on "Out of the Blue: A History of Coast Guard Aviation" exhibit. View the film "Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers" in the Gaither Auditorium. Visit with "Coastie" of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Junior Docents will lead hands-on activities that will include making a signal flag and a helicopter whirligig and participating in a scavenger hunt of the "Out of the Blue: A History of Coast Guard Aviation" gallery. This is a free family program.

National Night Out: Street Festival – Enjoy a night on the town with food, music, children’s activities and craft vendors. You can even try your hand at dunking members of the City Council in the dunking booth!

Coast Guard Day – Active duty, dependents, retirees, federal civilian employees, civilian guests and contractors welcome - Come celebrate the Coast Guard’s Birthday! 12 PM-3 PM – Nixon’s barbeque lunch served by community leaders, Music by American Idol contestant Ricky Braddy, clowns, games and tons of fun

Thursday, August 5 : 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, 252-338-6117. 611 East Main Street - Coast Guard families are invited to Port Discover to participate in Plankton Watch, Port Discover’s newest program. Collect water samples from the Pasquotank River and use Port Discover’s microscopes to observe and identify the plankton that live in the River. Learn to use Port Discover’s water testing equipment including Plankton Nets, pH meters, anemometers, and light meters. Explore the other Port Discover activities including the fossil dig, Experimentation Station, Flight Simulator, and more! For information, visit www.portdiscover.org.

Coast Guard Harbor Night Bring your lawn chair and your picnic basket and come out to enjoy a great night on the waterfront with live music! The acclaimed band Uphill will be playing blues for the whole family; the kids can bounce courtesy of Spacewalk of Currituck, food will be available for purchase.
