Elizabeth City, NC — October is Child Health Month and Port Discover has scheduled a month of health-focused activities for children and their families.
Port Discover, in partnership with the UNC-Chapel Hill/Elizabeth City State University Doctor of Pharmacy Partnership Program, will present a series of Thursday afternoon children’s health programs. Michelle Morrison, a third-year pharmacy student, will be at Port Discover to talk about Germs! Ms. Morrison will work with kids on what germs are, where germs grow, and how to avoid them. Activities will include going on a “Germ Hunt”, making a Petri dish culture of germs, and participating in an experiment about effective hand washing. Ms. Morrison will be at Port Discover on October 4, 11 and 25; Dr. Huyla Coker, director of the UNC-Chapel Hill/Elizabeth City State University Doctor of Pharmacy Partnership Program, will present the children’s program on October 18. Activities will run continuously from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm each day. Reservations are not required and the public is invited.
The Make-It-Take-It at Port Discover for October is Let’s Hear it for the Ear! In recognition of Child Health Month, children visiting Port Discover can try a variety of experiments that require use of the senses. Kids will make and take home a model eardrum. The activity is available during the hours Port Discover is open and is free, thanks to a grant from the City of Elizabeth City.
Port Discover is located at 613 East Main Street, Elizabeth City. Port Discover’s hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Programs can be arranged at other times for special groups. For more information call 252-338-6117 or go to their website.
Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.
