“Pirates, Shipwrecks and Treasures”

Mike Daniel, naval historian, underwater explorer and marine coordinator for the film industry, will present, “Pirates, Shipwrecks and Treasures” to Middle and High School teachers and students on Thursday, November 8, 2007 at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm in the Museum of the Albemarle’s Gaither Auditorium. Mr. Daniel will discuss current recovery efforts at the purported Queen Anne’s Revenge wreck site as well as his involvement with other shipwreck sites.

Mr. Daniel is well known for his find in 1996 of the purported wreck of Blackbeard’s flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge (QAR) off the coast of Beaufort, North Carolina. Mr. Daniel also discovered the treasure laden Spanish Galleon the 1656 Nuestra Senora dela Maravilla, the richest treasure ship found to date in the western hemisphere. In 1990, he discovered two 1838 Seminole Indian War battle sites, the last stand of the Seminole. Preschooler Time Returns to the Museum

Kids, bring your parents and join the Museum of the Albemarle on Thursday, September 13 at 10:00 am for Preschooler Time! Children ages 3 through 5 accompanied by an adult are introduced to the Museum and its purpose, listen to a story, and take part in a creative activity based on a monthly theme. Albemarle Roundtable Restarts

The Museum of the Albemarle kicks off its Fall Albemarle Historical Roundtable on Thursday, September 6th at 7:00 pm. The lecture series features Dr. Rebecca Seaman and is entitled “First Contact?: Reassessing Jamestown and Native Americans in the First Years.” Dr. Seaman, a Professor of History at Elizabeth City State University will be speaking in the Museum’s Gaither auditorium. This event is free to the public.

Dr. Rebecca Seaman has over 30 years experience in the field of education. She earned her bachelor degree in Social Science Secondary Education from Columbus College in Georgia. After a brief period of teaching and researching in Europe, she earned her masters in History at Auburn University. She earned her PH.D. from Auburn in 2001. Dr. Seaman currently teaches at Elizabeth City State University in the Department of History and Political Science. She also serves as the History Education Coordinator for secondary education in collaboration with ECSU’s Teacher Education Program.

The Roundtable presentation on September 6th will place the interaction of English and Pamunkeys (the Algonquians under Powhatan’s leadership) into perspective with contemporary events and issues as the Native Americans viewed their early contact experience.

Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science looks at “Creatures of the Night”, Saturday, September 8

Elizabeth City, NC— The deep sea animals which live in the dark, cold sea is the focus of “Creatures of the Night”, Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science program on Saturday, September 8. The program will look at how these animals survive without light and how they adapt to the deep, dark ocean. The program will be presented by Mandi Young, science teacher at Albemarle School and recipient of the 2007 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Teacher-at-Sea program.

The programs are appropriate for children in Kindergarten through Fifth grades. Second Saturday Science is free, thanks to our sponsor, Gateway Bank. Donations are accepted. Programs are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Due to limited space, reservations are required. Please call 252-338-6117 for registration.

Major League Baseball Retirees Lead Fall Baseball Clinics

ECSU head baseball Coach Terrance Whittle and the Viking baseball team will host two baseball clinics with two Major League Baseball retirees.

On September 8th from 3:00 - 5:00 pm at the RL Vaughan Center, the Vikings will welcome Wayne Gomes, formerly of the Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox. The pitching clinic registration cost is $40.00 in advance and $45.00 the day of the clinic.

On Saturday, October 8th New York Mets Hall of Famer Mookie Wilson will hold a baseball clinic from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at the RL Vaughan Center. Registration is $100.00 and begins on September 10th.
