March 2013: Bowie State, Elizabeth City State Bowlers Stay Unbeaten In Winner's Bracket of CIAA Championships

Bowie State, Elizabeth City State Bowlers Stay Unbeaten In Winner's Bracket of CIAA Championships

DURHAM, N.C. – Bowie State University and Elizabeth City State University both advanced to the winner’s bracket of the championship round at the CIAA Women’s Bowling Championships held at AMF Durham Lanes on Sunday, March 24, 2013.

Both teams remained unbeaten after winning two matches in double-elimination bracket play. Bowie State defeated Winston-Salem State 4-0 and Saint Augustine’s 4-3 while Elizabeth City State beat Virginia State 4-3 and Fayetteville State 4-1.

Both teams face each other in the winner’s bracket on Monday in the third round. The winner will advance to the finals and will need only one victory to claim the league title. The loser will head to the elimination bracket.

Bowie State and Elizabeth City State are two of six teams left in the tournament. The others are Fayetteville State, Saint Augustine’s, Winston-Salem State and Virginia State. Both Shaw and Virginia Union were eliminated after each team lost two matches in bracket play.

The other third round matches on Monday are Fayetteville State versus Virginia State and Saint Augustine’s versus Winston-Salem State in the elimination bracket. The third round gets underway at 9:35 a.m. on the final day of the tournament at AMF Durham Lanes. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be held on that day to determine the conference champion.

Watch the final day of the tournament on www.livestream.com/ciaa.

Saint Augustine’s entered bracket play on Sunday afternoon as the top seed after recording the highest pin count total from Saturday’s team matches and Sunday’s Baker matches. It was the highest seeding ever for the Lady Falcons in the history of their women’s bowling program.

Saint Augustine’s defeated eighth-seeded Shaw 4-2 in the first round of bracket play before losing to Bowie State in a seven-game thriller. Bowie State won the first three games but Saint Augustine’s rallied to tie the match at 3-3. Bowie State prevailed in the seventh and deciding game 182-177 to stay in the winner’s bracket.

Fayetteville State, the two-time defending CIAA champion, entered bracket play as the No. 2 seed. It beat No. 7 seed Virginia Union 4-1 before losing to Elizabeth City State in the second round. Fourth-seed Virginia State was knocked into the elimination bracket with a 4-3 loss to ECSU but rebounded to defeat Virginia Union 4-1 to stay alive. Winston-Salem State also survived after topping Shaw 4-1 in the elimination bracket after losing 4-0 to Bowie State in the first round.

Earlier in the day, Saint Augustine’s captured the No. 1 seed by rolling a 781 score against Winston-Salem State University in the last Baker's match in the seeding round to overtake Fayetteville State by one pin (7,691-7,690). Fayetteville State entered the day in the lead for the top seed after Saturday’s team matches, which they maintained until the fifth and final Baker’s match on Sunday. Fayetteville State bowled a 673 score in its final Baker’s match which opened the door for Saint Augustine’s.

Saint Augustine’s narrowly edged Fayetteville State for seeding in the tournament, after the Lady Broncos won the Southern Division title over the Lady Falcons by one match during the regular season.

Northern Division champion Bowie State gained the No. 3 seed with 7,568 total pins and Virginia State University earned the fourth seed with 7,432 pins. Elizabeth City State University captured the fifth seed with 7,385 pins and Winston-Salem State claimed the sixth seed with 7,193 pins. Virginia Union finished as the No. 7 seed with 6,825 pins followed by Shaw as the eighth seed with 6,418 pins.

The Lady Vikings gave a preview of what was to come in bracket play by bowling their best game in Sunday’s Baker’s matches to determine seeding. They almost recorded a perfect game, rolling a strike in all but one frame to score 227 points in game four of a 763-666 win over Shaw.

March 2013: Elizabeth City State Survives and Advances to CIAA Semifinals with Win Over Johnson C. Smith

Elizabeth City State Survives and Advances to CIAA Semifinals with Win Over Johnson C. Smith By Ryan Sarda

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Blake Price buried the go-ahead bucket to help Elizabeth City State knock off Johnson C. Smith 65-63 in the quarterfinal round of the CIAA Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena.

With the game tied at 63, Price sank a layup with 29 seconds remaining to give the Vikings the lead for good. He drove the length of the floor as time was winding down on the shot clock and got a nice reverse layup off to put the Vikings ahead.

“We’re fortunate to be advancing,” said Elizabeth City head coach Shawn Walker. “This was a difficult game and we knew it would be difficult. Johnson C. Smith beat us in January by 30. Of course, we know they are a very good team and capable of doing it again. We’re very lucky to win and very blessed to be moving on and happy to be moving on.”

The Golden Bulls had several chances to make something happen in the latter stages of the game. After a failed lob attempt to Emilio Parks inside, ECSU’s Angelo Sharpless tapped the ball out of bounds to give the Golden Bulls another chance.

On the ensuing inbounds pass, the Golden Bulls didn’t get the shot they wanted but they were given another opportunity as the ball fell out of bounds once again with .07 left on the clock. A three-point shot by Joshua Linson was short as time expired.

“It was a bit of a miscommunication,” said Johnson C. Smith head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. “I wanted a jump ball in the lane and Emilio went for the jump ball behind the defense, which was to their advantage. I really felt he could have gotten in front of the guy and out-jump the guy to get to the basket and have an opportunity to score the bucket. We didn’t get it done.”

The Vikings, the No. 2 seed from the Northern Division, were led by four players with double figures. Faulcon had a team-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting to lead the way for ECSU. Glenn Patterson added 11 while Price and Shaquil Barber contributed 10 apiece in the win. Angelo Sharpless, the CIAA Player of the Year, was limited to just eight points.

Johnson C. Smith, the No. 3 seed from the Southern Division, was led by Emilio Parks with 21 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Trevin Parks added 20, 18 of which came in the second half. Robert Williams added 14 points for the Golden Bulls to round out the double figure scorers.

The win advances Elizabeth City State to the semifinals where they will await the winner of Saint Augustine’s and Livingstone. That quarterfinal game will be played at 7:00 pm Thursday.

In the first half, Elizabeth City State rushed out to a 14-8 lead thanks to a pair of free throws from Blake Price at the 9:31 mark.

The Golden Bulls answered with a 9-0 run that gave them a five-point lead. During the run, Emilio Parks scored four points while Robert Williams had the other five to give the Golden Bulls a 19-14 advantage with 4:18 remaining.

The Vikings tied things up after going on a 5-0 run. A jumper from Sharpless tied things up at 19 with 2:40 left in the period.

Johnson C. Smith’s Antwan Wilkerson gave the Golden Bulls the lead back when he scored on a tip-in to make it 21-19. Elizabeth City State evened things once more when Dominique Byrd converted a layup at the 1:59 mark.

Emilio Parks, who had 13 points in the frame, scored the final three points of the half, giving his team a three-point lead. Barber cut it to one when he made a jump shot with 49 seconds left. His bucket made it 24-23 at halftime.

Both teams found their offensive rhythm in the second half as they combined for 81 points in the period. Elizabeth City State opened up the first six minutes of the second half on a 14-9 run to build a 37-33 lead.

Trevin Parks buried a three-pointer to bring the Golden Bulls within one with 13:44 remaining in the game. After a pair of free throws from Patterson pushed the Vikings’ lead back to three, Trevin Parks buried another three-pointer to tie the game at 39 with 13:08 remaining.

Elizabeth City State responded with a trey from Faulcon, which put the Vikings up 42-39. After a missed three-pointer by Johnson C. Smith, the Vikings extended their lead to five when Patterson converted a layup with 12:15 left in the game.

Emilio Parks brought the Golden Bulls within three when he made a layup at the 11:58 mark to make it 44-41. On the other end, Barber pushed it back to five when he made a jumper. Emilio Parks answered with a jumper of his own to bring JCSU’s deficit back to three at 46-43.

Faulcon buried a three-pointer to push the Vikings lead to six. A free throw by ECSU’s Jaron Moore gave the Vikings a 50-43 cushion with 10:03 remaining.

The Golden Bulls answered with a 10-2 run, thanks in large part to a three from Robert Williams and a pair from Trevin Parks. His trey at the 7:45 mark gave the Golden Bulls a 53-52 lead. Thirty-four seconds later, Barber sank a pair of free throws to give the Vikings the lead back at 54-53.

Emilio Parks’ dunk gave the Golden Bulls the 55-54 cushion. The Vikings regained the lead thanks to a jam from Byrd and a jumper from Barber, which made it 58-55 with 5:52 left.

After a jumper from Price extended Elizabeth City State’s lead to five at 60-55, the Golden Bulls responded with five quick points to tie the game. Wilkerson came up with a huge steal and made a lob to Trevin Parks while falling out of bounds. Parks took the ball down the floor and drove in for the layup to even things up at 60 with 3:07 left.

Sharpless gave the Vikings a 62-60 edge when he sank a pair of free throws before Linson buried a fade away jumper to tie the game once again.

Each team traded a free throw to make it a 63-63 ballgame with 58 ticks remaining. Twenty-nine seconds later, Price hit what would be the game-winning layup to help the Vikings advance to the semifinals.

December 2012: SHARPLESS NETS CAREER HIGH IN 107-87 WIN OVER FRANCIS MARION

SHARPLESS NETS CAREER HIGH IN 107-87 WIN OVER FRANCIS MARION

Patriots fall to Vikings as late rally falls short

Story Courtesy of Michael Hawkins, FMU Sports Information

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University cut a 21-point second-half deficit down to seven with four minutes remaining, but the Patriot rally would fall short as Elizabeth City State University claimed a 107-87 non-conference win Sunday afternoon in men’s basketball action.

Junior guard Evrik Gary paced the Patriots with 20 points and 10 rebounds, the third double-double of his career and second this season. Sophomore swingman Dustin Jones, and junior guards Chris Rhodes and Tyler Deihl each scored nine points.

Senior 6-4 swingman Angelo Sharpless, one of the top scorers in NCAA Division II, led the Vikings with a career high 35 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists. He was 10-of-14 from the floor and 14-of-19 at the free throw line. Deon Rice and Dominique Byrd chipped in with 12 points apiece in the win.

The Vikings opened the game with a three-pointer by Glenn Patterson and never trailed. The Patriots misfired on 18 of their first 23 shots from the field as ECSU opened up a 26-13 advantage near the midway point of the first stanza.

The lead would grow to 20 points (52-32) following a free throw by Shaquill Barber with 3:16 left before intermission. Francis Marion closed the half with a 12-4 spurt to trim the margin to 56-44 at halftime.

The lead swelled to 21 points four minutes into the second half when Quintin Spady drained a fast-break three-pointer. The Patriots gradually chipped away at the Viking lead and when Gary found Deihl alone under the basket for a layup, FMU trailed by only seven points (91-84) with 4:10 remaining.

However, Patterson answered with another three-pointer to ignite a decisive 10-0 ECSU run. Sharpless made five free throws during the spurt.

FMU managed only 29.3 percent shooting for the game, and was 7-of-35 from beyond the three-point arc. ECSU connected on 46 percent of its field goal attempts and was 40-of-61 at the foul line as FMU was whistled for 40 fouls.

ECSU (7-3) will begin 2013 with a three-game home stand on January 3rd when they host Shaw University in their CIAA opener at the RL Vaughan Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm. Follow on Twitter @ECSUVikings and visit www.ecsuvikings.com.

Vikings Use First Half Cushion, Hold On for Non-Conference Road Win

December 12, 2012

TAKOMA PARK, MD - Elizabeth City State University held off Washington Adventist University for a 72-59 win Wednesday night.

Glenn Patterson scored 12 of his season high 15 points in the first half, connecting on 4 of 5 attempts from behind the three point line. Angelo Sharpless finished with another double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds) his fourth of the season and second in as many games.

The Shock (3-10) placed four in double figures with Stephon Berry and Harvey Todd scoring 12 apiece in the losing effort.

The Vikings were up 35-20 at the intermission and led by as many as 24 (52-28) with 14:30 left in the game.

The contest was dictated by an incredulous amount of free throws with the two teams combining for 75 attempts from the charity stripe. The Vikings went 20-35 while WAU shot 25-45 on the evening.

The Shock trailed the entire game but managed a late push in the waning minutes to cut the Viking lead to single digits 68-59 with 57 seconds left. ECSU closed the game out at the free throw line, pushing the lead back to double figures for the final point spread.

ECSU (6-2) will play their final home game of 2012 when they host Saint Leo University on Monday at the RL Vaughan Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Follow on Twitter @ECSUVikings and visit www.ecsuvikings.com.

It’s time to play ball at the Elizabeth City South Park Sports Complex!

(Elizabeth City, NC, August 11, 2011) – Elizabeth City is just days away from its first youth baseball tournament at the new South Park Sports Complex. On Aug. 20, up to 30 teams representing Nations Baseball Virginia, drawing players from Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, will travel with their families to Elizabeth City for the competition, while staying in area hotels and dining in local restaurants. The weekend is a culmination of an effort by Elizabeth City/Pasquotank County Parks and Recreation and the Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (ECACVB) to bring sports tourism to the area while providing local youth a new sports facility.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to serve both our local youth teams as well as neighboring leagues with such a beautiful facility,” said Parks and Recreation Director Bobbi White. “Elizabeth City offers a close-in destination with excellent playing fields and family-friendly amenities, and we are excited about getting the fall season underway.” [read more]

ECSU professor advises summer skin precautions

Contact: Kesha Williams

Director of Media Relations

Number: 252.335.3686

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-----ECSU's Summer Session is in full swing, with students striding across campus to classes, study sessions or sunny breaks on the promenade.

While basking in the sunshine has its pleasures, Dr. Anthony Emekalam, ECSU clinical assistant professor of pharmacy, cautions that overexposure to the sun can be hazardous, even for African-Americans.

"Skin cancer is a very serious problem among African-Americans primarily because many African-Americans erroneously believe they are immune to skin cancer," said Emekalam, a native of Nigeria. "Our skin has advantages of pigmentation, but it's not excluded from the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. We are putting ourselves in harm's way and not knowing it."

The summer months pose "serious risks of skin damage for students because they tend to spend more time outdoors with very little clothing" to protect them from the sun, he said. Students head to the beach for a day or weekend of fun in the sun not knowing that sand and other bright surfaces reflect UV rays and can double UV exposure.

The consequences can be dangerous.

According to the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, more than 2 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States. The most common form of skin cancer among African-Americans is squamous cell carcinoma, which is easier to cure particularly if detected early. The more dangerous skin cancer, melanoma, is more often diagnosed among Caucasians.

However, even with the incidence of melanoma being lower among African-Americans, the fatality rate among African-Americans with melanoma is higher than for Caucasians, Emekalam said. "That's due to the fact that such forms of cancer usually are diagnosed late among the African-American population."

Contributing to the problem is the misconception that "black don't crack." Melanin, the agent that gives skin its color, confers a significant level of protection from dangerous and cancer-causing UV rays to people with darker complexions and skin tones compared to Caucasians and people with lighter skin color, Emekalam noted. But having an abundance of melanin does not grant immunity from skin cancer to people of color, he said.

The first level of protection is knowledge, Emekalam said.

"We have to be aware that we can burn, even on cloudy days. We may not turn bright lobster red, but that doesn't mean we don't burn," he said.

Students, he said, should look for the following signs to determine if they have suffered sunburn or skin damage from overexposure: tingling or burning sensations on the skin, numbness or dullness, excessive dryness, blisters and peeling, or fine bumps like an allergic reaction.

Any prominent or abnormal changes or deviations from what's normal for the skin, including moles, should be looked at by a doctor, Emekalam said.

Emekalam and Dr. Joseph T. Jenkins, a general surgeon with Carolina Surgical Care in Elizabeth City, N.C., who handles a number of skin cancer cases each year, recommended that students avoid prolonged outdoor exposure and wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher when outside.

"It's hard to change behavior, but we can educate students on how to protect themselves from the sun," Jenkins said.

Emekalam agrees. Working as a community pharmacist in Washington several years ago, he helped educate young people about healthy outdoor living by contributing to a brochure on how to stay safe in the summer months. He plans to do something similar at ECSU, possibly for the second Summer Session or for Student Orientation in August.

"The key element is awareness," Emekalam said. "Once students understand the problem, then they can do something about it."
