News from Port Discover


Discover the Science of the Dark at Port Discover, October 30 & 31


Elizabeth City, NC — Explore the creatures of the night, pirates of the sea, and things that spark in the dark at Port Discover on Tuesday, October 30 and Wednesday, October 31. Learn about bats and how these creatures sense in the dark. Find out why pirates where those eye patches. Create sparks from quartz rocks and wintergreen candies. There will be lots of hands-on activities to try and goodies to take home! The activities are free and ongoing throughout Port Discover’s hours, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

Port Discover is located at 613 East Main Street, Elizabeth City. Port Discover’s hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Programs can be arranged at other times for special groups. For more information call 252-338-6117 or http://www.portdiscover.org/.

Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

Pre-Schooler Time

Museum of the Albemarle will hold “Pre-Schooler Time” on Thursday, November 8, 2007 from 10:00 am until 10:45 am. Participants must be between the ages of 3 to 5 years old and must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-Schoolers will have the opportunity to discover how people traveled before trains, planes and automobiles. This is free to the public.

Costume contest 1:00 am Saturday Oct 27 Prizes will be awarded

Food Drive - Drop off donations beginning Monday, Oct 22 thru Thurs, Oct 25 at Mall Management office between hours of 9:00 am - 5:00 pm or bring during the event Fri & Sat 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Items needed: canned cat/kitten food, canned dog/puppy food, dry dog/cat food, cat litter, chew toys for dogs/cats, dog/cat shampoo, bleach, paper towels and rubber backed rugs.

Adoption requirements: 1) if you are a current pet owner please bring up-to-date vet records for all pets; 2) if you rent your home please bring proof that you may have pets, ie copy of lease or verifiable written permission from landlord.

Adoption fees: Dogs - $30.00; Cats - $20.00; Additional $15.00 if animal has been spayed or neutered.

All fountain coins for the month of Oct will be donated to local animal shelters. FMI please call the Southgate Mall at 252-338-2848.

At first light, 150 two-man teams headed out for the Fishers of Men East Regional.

Despite several fishermen reporting tough conditions with high wind and cooler temperatures, Gil Burke and Michael Wenthe had no trouble.

The pair holds the tournament lead with a first-day catch of 17.87 pounds. Second place belongs to the father-son team of Larry and David Jacobs, who hauled in a five-fish limit weighing 17.39 pounds.

Keith Meads and Gerald Murray currently have the biggest fish of the tourney, with a 6.60 pound lunker.

The tournament, which is being held on the Pasquotank River, concludes today.
