Collectively, they weave together a relatively unknown chapter of Union occupation in Elizabeth City through real-life accounts of arson, ambush, guerrilla warfare – and the tragic tale of a family murdered on a trip to town.
Today, the Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Museum of the Albemarle unveiled six historical markers featured in Civil War Trails, a popular self-guided tour that links Civil War battlegrounds and sites in 28 states and more than 800 interpretive markers in Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee and North Carolina.
