22nd Annual Landmark Competition

The 22nd Annual Landmark Competition and Show to be on exhibit September 8 – October 10 will open at the Arts of the Albemarle (AOA) Gallery this Sunday. The obviously popular show historically features over 150 paintings from artists across the states of North Carolina and Virginia. Landmark is admired not just because of the number of paintings available but for the quality of work that AOA is known for.

An opening reception will be held Sunday September 14 from 5:30 – 7 pm at the AOA Gallery where you may meet and talk with many of the artists in the show. The reception is free and no reservations are required.

The Gallery is located at 609 East Main Street and regular Gallery hours are Mon. – Sat. 10 am – 5 pm and Thursdays until 7 pm.

Horse Drawn Hayrides at North River Campground, Shawboro, NC

North River Campground is teaming up with Carolina Carriages to offer fall fun for the entire family. Horse drawn hay wagon pulled by two majestic Percheron draft horses will take you on a tour of the campground situated in beautiful, rural Camden County, NC outside of Elizabeth City. Miniature golf, playground and game room also open to the public. Hayrides are only $2.00 per person, every Saturday in October and November 1, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Horseback Riding at Harvest Moon Farm, Camden, NC

Harvest Moon Farm, near Elizabeth City, North Carolina, will begin offering horseback riding lessons, trail rides and pony rides this fall starting October 1st. An American Riding Instructor Association (ARIA) certified instructor will offer English riding lessons, including hunter and dressage, beginner through advanced riders, ages 5 to adult. Horse and cart driving lessons will also be available. Trail rides will take place through the farmland and forest on the farm and can also be arranged off-site at nearby horse trail locations including beach rides on the Outer Banks. Pony rides can be arranged on the farm or at your location, including pony parties. Harvest Moon Farm, LLC, located at 286 NC Rt. 343 South in Camden, is also the home of Carolina Carriages and carriage rides or horse drawn hayrides can also be arranged for special occasions, schools, groups and events at the farm or at your location. Port Discover’s Toddler Time Looks at “Swampy Critters”, Thursday, September 18

Elizabeth City, NC — Preschoolers at Port Discover’s September 18 Toddler Time will learn all about “Swampy Critters” — the animals that inhabit the Great Dismal Swamp. The program will discuss why reptiles and amphibians are cold-blooded and which birds lay and incubate their eggs in the winter. Everyone will make their own swampy critter to take home. The program begins at 10:00 am.

A fee of $5 per family and reservations are required. Program is for 3 – 5 year-olds and parents or guardians must accompany the child.

Port Discover is located at 613 East Main Street, Elizabeth City. Port Discover’s hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Programs can be arranged at other times for special groups. For more information call 252-338-6117 or www.portdiscover.org.

Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank-Camden Emergency Operations Center was activated at 12:01 p.m. today, Friday, September 5, 2008 in anticipation of Tropical Storm Hanna.

Elizabeth City, Pasquotank and Camden Counties have all declared a State of Emergency. The area will be experiencing the affects from Tropical Storm Hanna with gale force winds of 40 mph beginning around midnight on Friday and continuing throughout the day on Saturday. The maximum sustained winds expected in our area are 55 mph. A threat for tornadoes in our area exists due to the storm track. While no evacuation orders are being issued at this time for the area, a Red Cross shelter will open on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Knobbs Creek Recreation Center on Ward Street.

The Emergency Operations Center will be utilizing its emergency notification system to keep our citizens apprised of the storm’s status. To receive updated storm information, please call the Pasquotank-Camden Hotline at 331-7474.

We will reopen at our regular time (2:00 pm on Sunday, Sept. 7th)
