Museum Celebrates a Colonial Christmas

(Elizabeth City, NC) On Saturday, December 6 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm everyone is invited to celebrate a Colonial Christmas at the Museum of the Albemarle! It’s the Museum of the Albemarle’s annual open house. Tour the Museum decorated for the holidays with a colonial theme. Kids can enjoy creative activities such as making beeswax candles and tin punch ornaments. Snack on gingerbread cookies and sip some hot cider. Music from the College of the Albemarle band is sure to help put you in the holiday spirit. Plus, be sure to catch the highlight of the day-a visit from Santa! This is a free event and is open to the public.

The ECSU Annual International Covered Dish Supper

Bring a small covered dish and enjoy the fellowship and GREAT food that comes at this annual event, this time in Elizabeth City State University's K.E. White Center central meeting room at 6:00 pm, Friday, November 21, 2008. Whole families are welcome, even babies and especially elders. This is a family event. There is no admission charge except to bring a dish.

Bring a dish, or bring a beverage (they're always needed) and enjoy the fact that we have an international campus in our town.

Wear a foreign costume if you have one to share. There is usually an informal fashion show during the evening.

    (Elizabeth City, NC) The Museum of the Albemarle will host "Designers' Workshop: Deck Those Halls" Saturday, December 13, 2008 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm.

    Catch the Christmas spirit! Enjoy a day at the Museum constructing your own holiday decorations. This year you can construct a Williamsburg style Della Robia apple cone with faux fruit and greenery that can be used year after year. All supplies will be provided in the workshop fee that includes a delicious catered lunch. This workshop is designed for adults and is suitable for clubs or groups on an alternate date. The event is $35.00 per person or $30.00 per person for Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle members if registered by November 20. Thereafter the registration fee is $40.00 per person or $35.00 per person for a FOMOA member. Registrations are limited, so please register early.

    Pre-registration and payment is required. A completed registration form and a check for payment are necessary to have guaranteed registration for this event.

    Jingle Bells are Rocking at the Museum of the Albemarle

    (Elizabeth City, NC) The Museum of the Albemarle will host “Jingle Bells are Rocking at Museum of the Albemarle” on Friday, December 19, 2008 from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm for kindergarten through fourth grade children. The event is $20.00 per child or $17.00 per child for Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle member if registered by December 1, 2008. After December 1, 2008, the event is $25.00 per child or $22.00 per child for FOMOA members. The event is limited to twenty-five children.

    Participants will spend an afternoon learning the history of gingerbread at Christmas while decorating their own gingerbread house.

    Pre-registration and payment is required. A completed registration form and a check for payment are necessary to have guaranteed registration for event.

    Port Discover’s Toddler Time Presents Thanksgiving Think About Its, November 20

    Elizabeth City, NC — Thanksgiving Think-About-Its is the theme of Port Discover’s Toddler Time, Thursday, November 20. Preschoolers will discover why leaves change color in the fall, how pumpkins can come in all sorts of colors, and learn why turkeys have such funny tail feathers. The children will create and take home their own autumn leaf turkey. The program begins at 10:00 am.

    A fee of $5.00 per family and reservations are required. Program is for 3 – 5 year-olds and parents or guardians must accompany the child.

    Port Discover is located at 613 East Main Street, Elizabeth City. Port Discover’s hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Programs can be arranged at other times for special groups. For more information call 252-338-6117 or www.portdiscover.org.

    Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits.     Relatively Unknown Chapter of Civil War History Comes to Light in Elizabeth City, NC

    (Elizabeth City, NC, Nov. 6, 2008) – Separately, the stories are riveting. Collectively, they weave together a relatively unknown chapter of Union occupation in Elizabeth City through real-life accounts of arson, ambush, guerrilla warfare – and the tragic tale of a family murdered on a trip to town.

    Today, the Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Museum of the Albemarle unveiled six historical markers featured in Civil War Trails, a popular self-guided tour that links Civil War battlegrounds and sites in 28 states and more than 800 interpretive markers in Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee and North Carolina.
