    MUSEUM NEEDS JUNIOR DOCENTS

    (Elizabeth City) Highly motivated young students between the ages 13 to 17 are invited to become part of the exciting Junior Docent program. Junior Docents are museum volunteers who are trained to participate in family and children’s programming and to help museum visitors better understand and appreciate the history of our area. Junior Docents assist in a variety of programming including: gallery tours, costumed interpretation, living history events, creative children’s activities, gallery carts and hands-on-history.

    Becoming a Junior Docent is an opportunity for teenagers to explore history, develop skills in leadership, time management and public speaking while at the same time making a significant contribution to the community.

    Selection is based upon application, 2 teacher recommendations, parent or guardian permission, and an interview. Junior Docents are required to volunteer at least four hours a month and are expected to remain in the program for one year.

    Charlotte Underwood Named Director of the Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau

    (Elizabeth City, NC, Dec. 11, 2008) – The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) has named Charlotte Underwood director of the Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (ECACVB), the Authority announced today.

    “Wonderful Winter” Set for Port Discover’s Toddler Time Thursday, December 18

    Elizabeth City, NC — What happens to the world around us during the winter months? Toddlers will learn about animal adaptations and the changes in the winter during the Toddler Time, Wonderful Winter, Thursday, December 18, 10:00 am. Children will get to be amateur archeologists on a frozen treasure hunt and conduct experiments with snow and ice.

    A fee of $5.00 per family and reservations are required. Program is for 3 – 5 year-olds and parents or guardians must accompany the child.

    Port Discover is located at 613 East Main Street, Elizabeth City. Port Discover’s hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Programs can be arranged at other times for special groups. For more information call 252-338-6117 or www.portdiscover.org.

    Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

    Legendary 1940s “Candy Bomber” to Drop Chocolates on Elizabeth City, Dec. 13
    -- Col. Gail Halvorsen to co-pilot Berlin Airlift Re-enactment --

    (Elizabeth City, NC, Dec. 5, 2008) – From the cockpit of a C-54, U.S. Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen made international news in 1948 when he dropped chocolate bars and bubble gum to West German children, deprived of food – and treats – through a Soviet-controlled blockade.
    Known as “Uncle Wiggly Wings” and “The Chocolate Flier,” Halvorsen will again be the apple of children’s eyes when he drops sweets to Elizabeth City youth during a re-enactment of the famous 1948-49 Berlin Airlift, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Regional Airport.     Basic Law Enforcement Training Recognition Ceremony

    College of The Albemarle will hold a recognition ceremony for Fall 2008 graduates of the Basic Law Enforcement Training program on Friday, December 12, 2008 at the COA Auditorium on the Elizabeth City Campus. The ceremony begins at 4:00 pm.
