THE ANNIE L. SAILS AT MOA

(Elizabeth City, NC) The infamous steamer Annie L. Vansciver is now sailing at the Museum of the Albemarle! The Annie L. as she was affectionately known, was the most beloved of many passenger and freight steamers that plied the Albemarle region when watercraft were the primary means of transportation. A detailed scale model of the Annie L. is on display at MOA and the accompanying graphics tell her story. Also featured is a portrait of its last captain, Gabriel F. Johnson, Sr. in its original frame and glass. Built in 1905 in Camden, New Jersey, the Annie L. eventually became a familiar sight to Elizabeth City citizens as she is best remembered for her Sunday beach excursions from the city to Nags Head.

The Museum of the Albemarle is located at 501 South Water Street, Elizabeth City, NC. (252)335-1453. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Sunday, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Closed Mondays and State Holidays. Serving Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington counties, the museum is the northeast regional history museum of the North Carolina Division of State History Museums. SHOWBOAT: USS NORTH CAROLINA ARTIFACTS FEATURED AT THE MUSEUM OF THE ALBEMARLE

(Elizabeth City, NC) The USS North Carolina was commissioned in 1941 as the lead ship of the two-ship North Carolina class battleship for the U.S. Navy. The Museum of the Albemarle, 501 South Water Street, Elizabeth City brings the story home in the current exhibit “Showboat: The USS North Carolina (BB-55).” When the USS North Carolina was built, she attracted much attention at the time, as she was the first American battleship to be constructed in 16 years. When the impressive battleship was first seen in early trials, she received so much attention that she won the nickname “Showboat.” MOA presents the story of the USS North Carolina in graphics, photos, scale models and artifacts honoring her many years in service to the country. She participated in the many battles in the Pacific theater of World War II and patrolled off the coast of Japan after the war, and was decommissioned in 1947.
