Kate Willink Lecture, October 18, 2009 @ MOA

The Museum of the Albemarle will host Kate Willink, Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Communication Studies at the University of Denver, on Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the Gaither Auditorium. Ms. Willink author of “Bringing Desegregation Home: Memories of the Struggle toward School Integration in Rural North Carolina” will present a lecture and sign books.

Ms. Willink’s book discusses the turmoil that evolved with the 1954 decision of the U.S. Supreme Court that ordered states to eliminate racial segregation in public schools with “all deliberate speed” in Camden County. Ms. Willink recorded oral histories from students, parents, teachers and principals that tell fascinating stories, filled with pride, disappointment, humor and terror.

Ms. Willink’s research focuses on race relations, education, ethnography and cultural memory. Ms. Willink is a graduate of Cornell University, University of New Mexico and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
