River City CDC's Upcoming Group WorkCamp Project

Elizabeth City, North Carolina: River City Community Development Corporation is sponsoring its Group Workcamp project to provide minor home repairs or upgrades for the elderly, disabled, and low income residents in the Elizabeth City and Pasquotank area at no charge to the homeowner. The purpose of the WorkCamp is to help young people grow in their Christian faith through service to others, assist elderly, low-income and disabled people needing basic home repair and maintenance, assist communities with much needed repairs, and provide cross-cultural service experiences for young people. Individuals and youth from around the country representing many Christian denominations will spend the week of July 26, 2009 - August 1, 2009, in our community performing hands-on repair and upgrade projects at no cost to the selected homeowner. They will build wheelchair ramps, interior and exterior painting, repair windows and porches, repair drywall, and many other types of meaningful home repairs. Approximately 70 homes will be chosen through an application process. While 80 percent of eligible North Carolinian's receive the EITC, conservative estimates are that workers leave at least $135 million unclaimed. DUCK HUNTING AT THE MUSEUM OF THE ALBEMARLE

(Elizabeth City, NC) The March 8, 2009 Albemarle Historic Roundtable will feature local historian Travis Morris. Mr. Morris has written several books focused on duck hunting in the Albemarle region. They include: Currituck Memories and Adventures: More Tales from a Native Gunner, Currituck: Ducks, Politics, and Outlaw Gunners, and Duck Hunting on Currituck Sound: Tales from a Native Gunner.

The lecture will take place in the Museum’s Gaither Auditorium at 2:00 pm. It is free and open to the public. Mr. Morris will be available for a book signing after the lecture.
