"Market Impossible Throw Down!" Chefs Andy Montero and Andy Lewis to Face Off, June 27, for Live Cooking Event

(Elizabeth City, NC, June 11, 2009) – Does cooking dinner have you in a race against the clock? Andy Montero and Andy Lewis will soon relate. The Elizabeth City chefs will have one hour to shop for and prepare a gourmet meal before a live audience when the Downtown Waterfront Market hosts a "Market Impossible Throw Down!" June 27 at 10:00 am in Elizabeth City.

Provided with a few choice cooking staples and a "mystery" protein, the chefs will have 10 minutes to scour the market for fresh produce and goods, then 50 minutes to whip up an inspired entrée and some sides. A panel of judges will decide the winner. [read more]

The Albemarle Chorale's 2009 - 2010 Events

"Yo Ho Ho: Pirates of North Carolina"

(Elizabeth City) Join the Museum of the Albemarle on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm for a high-seas adventure in a one day camp.

Participants, completing kindergarten through third grade, will discover the pirates that sailed the coast of North Carolina, the ships that were sailed and the weapons that were used. Enjoy creative activities centered on pirate lore, legend and history. Snacks and box lunch will be provided. Limited space and registration required. Fee for program if registered by Friday, July 10, 2009: $20.00 per person or $18.00 for FOMOA Members. After Friday, July 10, 2009: $25.00 per person or $22.00 for FOMOA Members.

Summer Science Camps Set at Port Discover

Elizabeth City, NC --- Port Discover: Northeastern North Carolina’s Center for Hands-on Science, offers three science camps this summer, providing hands-on and age-appropriate activities for Kindergartners through eighth graders.

"Savvy Science Explorers," is scheduled for July 27 – 29 and designed for students who have completed 3rd – 5th grade. During the Savvy Science Explorers camp, the children will explore GPS & geocaching, gadgetology and kitchen science. Camp activities will give campers the opportunity to put their knowledge to use, including creating pizzas at Montero’s, building toys, and GPS scavenger hunts. Camp will run from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm. Cost is $75 per child; $67.50 for members.

"Animal Science Careers" is the theme for the science camp for students who have completed 6th – 8th grade. The camp is scheduled for August 3 – 5, from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm. Campers will meet professionals who earn their living caring for, studying, and training animals — from endangered species and the fish in the rivers to domesticated horses and dogs. They will also learn about necessary training and education and get an up-close look at this career path. Hours of the camp are 8:30 am – 12:00 pm. Cost is $75 per child; $67.50 for members.

"Destination Science," gives Kindergartners – 2nd graders, a great science camp experience from August 10 – 12. Children will measure and observe in a science laboratory, explore the science behind toy building, and get dirty with some backyard science gardening. Activities during camp will give kids an opportunity to put their new found knowledge to use. Hours of the camp are 8:30 am – 12:00 pm. Cost is $75 per child; $67.50 for members.

Port Discover’s Toddler Time Looks at "Pictures in the Sky"

Elizabeth City, NC — Preschoolers will learn about constellations and the stories of the stars during Port Discover’s Toddler Time, "Pictures in the Sky", on Thursday, June 18, at 10:00 am. The young astronomers will create their own constellation to take home and make an edible Big Dipper!

Toddler Time is a science program just for preschoolers, ages 3 – 5. Cost for the program is $5 per family and reservations are required. Parents or guardians must accompany the child.
