WORMS AND VERMICULTURE AT MOA
(Elizabeth City NC) The Museum of the Albemarle will present a Chowan County Masters Gardeners program entitled "Vermiculture & Vermicomposting for Plant & Soil Health" on Saturday September 19th from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. The program will be presented by William Jowers, Chowan County Master Gardener Volunteer. Bill has been a Master Gardener Volunteer since 2004. He is a lifelong Organic Gardener & has been a long time practitioner of Vermiculture and Vermicomposting.The program will focus on Vermiculture and the creation & uses of Vermicompost. Vermiculture is the raising of a particular species of earthworm that eats organic waste & converts it to nutrient rich Worm Castings which is Vermicompost. "Vermicompost has been shown in scientific studies to increase plant & soil vigor. Science has shown that it can suppress many plant diseases & root nematodes. It also rejuvenates the soil by adding microbes that help with nutrient uptake for plants."

The program will consist of two (2) parts

Part 1:

• Types of worms to raise
• How to build or buy worm bins
• How to setup & manage the bins.
• How to harvest worms & or Vermicompost.

Part 2:

• Exactly what is Vermicompost
• How worms make Vermicompost
• Uses of Vermicompost

ECSU Picks Up First CIAA Win of the Season On The Road

RICHMOND, VA - The Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings took exactly one hour to defeat Virginia Union University in three straight games (25-7, 25-9, 25-12) Tuesday night at Barco-Stevens Gymnasium.

The Lady Vikings had 36 kills versus only 4 hitting errors and smashed a season high 18 service aces. In limited action, Eva Johnson and Lia Scott led ECSU with 8 and 7 kills respectively as the Lady Vikings hit a season best 51% from the floor. They also amassed a total of 6.0 team blocks (1 solo, 10 assisted)

The Lady Panthers (3-4) fall to 3-4 on the year.

The Lady Vikings (3-4, CIAA 1-0) will return to the court at the 2009 CIAA Volleyball Roundup in Hampton, VA September 11-13th at the Boo Williams Sportsplex. Also, Friday Sept 11, 2009 is now a national day of service. The River City Community Development Corporation is hosting education to Green Your Block, including presentations by Extension Agents Yvonne Mullen and Tom Campbell who will be speaking respectively on Low Cost Energy Conserving Technologies and Low Cost Low Maintenance Food Gardening and Yard Maintenance methods. Coast Guard Exhibit at MOA!

COAST GUARD EXHIBIT SET TO FLY!
(Elizabeth City, NC) The Museum of the Albemarle's Coast Guard Exhibit, Out of The Blue: Coast Guard Aviation will open Saturday, October 3 at 9:00 am honoring our Nation's ever-vigilant maritime guardians. Active and retired Coast Guard personnel, along with museum representatives, will be on hand to cut the ribbon and dedicate the newest exhibit that pays tribute to the men and women of the United States Coast Guard. This exhibit features over 120 artifacts, photographs, graphic panels, and a special kid-sized helicopter modeled on the whimsical design of artist Doug Lane, a retired Coast Guardsman. The exhibit tells the story of the Coast Guard from its formation in 1790 to the present day. Each of the eight sections focuses on various aspects of the Coast Guard with emphasis on aviation and special concentration on Air Station Elizabeth City.

After the 9:00 am ribbon cutting, the day's events will continue at 10:00 am with Sergei Sikorsky presenting "Recollections of a Pioneer" and Stewart Graham presenting "Helicopter Development Program at Elizabeth City." Mr. Sikorsky will discuss the history and development of Igor Sikorsky’s helicopter. Retired Commander Graham will discuss the early history of helicopter development in Elizabeth City. At approximately 11:00 am, a Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City will provide a Search and Rescue demonstration on the Pasquotank River (conditions permitting). At 11:30 am, Retired Commander Bruce Melnick will speak about his Coast Guard career and about his becoming the first Coast Guardsman astronaut. Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station will present a lecture at 12:30 pm on the Mirlo. James Charlet will tell the story of the brave surf-men who rescued all 42 crew-members from the burning British tanker.
The speaker series will conclude after a 1:00 pm lecture on the "Pritchard, Bottoms, Howarth Expedition" presented by Commander Joseph Deer and Master Chief John Long. They will provide details on the rescue of a downed U.S. Air Force B-17 crew in November of 1942 near Greenland and a second rescue attempt that resulted in a plane crash with no survivors.

Visitors can view displays and participate in hands-on activities throughout the day in the Museum.

On Sunday, October 4 at 2:00 pm, Joseph "Butch" Flythe will speak on his 25-year career in Coast Guard Search and Rescue as a helicopter rescue swimmer. Mr Flythe is also known for his role as an instructor in the
2006 movie, "The Guardian."

Stivers Named Offensive Lineman While Hamilton Tabbed as Top Defensive Back

HAMPTON, VA - Two members of the Elizabeth City State University football team have been named CIAA Players of the Week at their respective positions as released by the conference office Monday morning.

Seniors Dylan Stivers and Justin Hamilton, who were both named to the 2009 Pre-Season All-CIAA Team, have been named Offensive Lineman and Defensive Back of the Week.

Dylan Stivers blocked for a line that gained only positive yardage in Saturday's 51-10 win over Johnson C. Smith. For the second week in a row the Vikings amassed over 400 yards of total offense (429 yard on 55 plays); 170 yards on the ground and 259 through the air while allowing no sacks on Saturday. ECSU was also 3-for-4 in the red zone.

Justin Hamilton, a two-time All-CIAA honoree, had 5 tackles (4 solo, 1 assisted), 1 tackle for a loss of 13 yards, 2 forced fumbles and a blocked punt which he recovered in the Golden Bulls' end zone for a touchdown. The blocked punt and recovery also credited him with a punt return for 24 yards.

Port Discover Asks "Can You Hear Me?" at Toddler Time, September 17
Elizabeth City, NC — Children are invited to learn about sound and how it travels at Port Discover’s Toddler Time, "Can You Hear Me?", Thursday, September 17 at 10 a.m. Using their sense of hearing, the young scientists will be challenged to identify some unknown sounds. Every child will also make their own sound phones to take home.

Toddler Time is a science program just for preschoolers, ages 3 – 5. Cost for the program is $5 per family and reservations are required. Parents or guardians must accompany the child.

The 12th annual Down East Viking Football Classic (DEVFC) is scheduled for September 16 – 19, 2009, in Rocky Mount, N.C. Elizabeth City State University and the City of Rocky Mount collaborate to hold the classic and a host of events planned to involve fans of all ages. The football game, September 19, is held in the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex and will bring the Chowan University Hawks to the field for their first appearance in the classic. Operations of the Down East Viking Football Classic are managed via an executive and steering committee structure. Mrs. Julia Congleton-Bryant, an ECSU alumna and a Rocky Mount citizen, and Mr. Thurlis Little, Director of Athletics, are co-chairs of the DEVFC Committee.

The Down East Classic, now in its 12th year, has grown each year drawing over 10,000 fans to the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex. It is an athletic event that brings college football to the Rocky Mount area. Fans enjoy a CIAA football game, golf challenge, college and regional high school bands, and a variety of social and entertainment activities. Through additional recruitment and outreach activities, ECSU also offers scholarship opportunities for students in the Rocky Mount-Nash-Edgecombe-Wilson areas. The CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) is a premier NCAA Division II athletic conference. Elizabeth City State University, located in northeastern North Carolina, is a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina. This year's opponent Chowan University is located in Murfreesboro, NC.
