Damika Howard wins 2009 Community Impact Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- Ms. Damika Howard, a junior from Virginia Beach, VA, received the 2009 Community Impact Award for Elizabeth City State University. The Community Impact Award is presented annually to one student from each member campus of the NC Campus Compact program. The award is presented to students who have made significant, innovative contributions to campus-based efforts to address community needs. Ms. Howard has been involved in the Student Government Association for three years. She currently serves as Student Activities President and works to organize student activities and events such as homecomings, step shows and student forums. During Ms. Howard’s tenure in the SGA, student involvement has increased significantly. Ms. Howard also demonstrates leadership through participation in organizations and programs including Sigma Alpha Pi, Orientation Leader, Peer Health Educator, Viking Scholar, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. Ms. Howard is heavily involved in peer mentoring young females, serves as a big sister at Girls, Inc. and has her own non-profit organization called DEW (Dedicated to Empower Young Women) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Ms. Howard, along with other students, will promote the importance of saving energy and recycling in 2010.
