Powell, McNeill Headline Four Offensive Selections
July 19, 2011
HAMPTON, VA- The CIAA has released the 2011 All-CIAA Football Preseason team and Predicted Order of finish as voted on by the CIAA Football Coaches Association.
The Vikings were picked to finish atop the CIAA North followed by defending division champion Virginia State University. Bowie State, Virginia Union, Chowan and Lincoln (Pa.) round out the North’s lineup while the Shaw Bears, last year’s conference champion, leads the South’s picks followed by Winston-Salem State, Saint Augustine’s, Fayetteville State, Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone College.
ECSU tied with Winston-Salem State and Shaw for the most representation with five selections each. Making his second consecutive appearance on the preseason squad is senior quarterback Creven Powell, who earned second team All-CIAA honors last season after passing for 1,662 yards and 10 touchdowns. Joining Powell is preseason All-American tailback DaRonte McNeill along with senior offensive linemen Baron Coffin and Bryan Garnett, a core that helped the Vikings to a second place ranking in both total and rushing offense in 2010. McNeill finished with 1,321 yards as a sophomore, the first Viking to break the 1,000 yard plateau since the 1994 season.
Senior defensive lineman Larry Jones also gets a preseason nod as the only ECSU student-athlete on the preseason defensive team.
The CIAA will formally recognize the Team and Predicted Order of Finish on Thursday at the Preseason Press Conference at the Gateway Dining and Event Center on the campus of Virginia State University at 11:30am.
ECSU will kick off the season at Delta State University in Cleveland, MS on August 27th at 6:00pm CST. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
