July 6, 2011: ECSU FOOTBALL TO FACE DELTA STATE IN SEASON OPENER

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Elizabeth City State University will open up the 2011 season on August 27th when they travel to Cleveland, Mississippi to take on Delta State University.

Game time is tentatively slated for 6:00pm CST at Horace McCool Stadium.

The NCAA granted ECSU a waiver allowing them to begin the season a week early, thus rounding out a 10-game slate for the Vikings who lost a game when Saint Paul’s College discontinued their athletic program in May of this year.

October 1st will now serve as a bye week between the Vikings’ road games at Shaw University (September 24th) and Virginia Union (October 8th).

The two teams’ lone meeting took place on November 18, 2006 when ECSU hosted their first ever playoff game at Roebuck Stadium in Elizabeth City. The Statesmen rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to hand ECSU a 17-10 loss in their first playoff appearance since 1981 (Northern Michigan). That season ECSU finished with the best record in school history with a 9-3 mark.

Delta State is coming off an 11-4 record in 2010, losing in the NCAA Championship game to the University of Minnesota-Duluth 20-17.

ECSU will hold their first practice on August 6th. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
