“Jefferson Davis’ Visit to Wilmington and Fort Fisher” marks the 150th anniversary of Confederate President Jefferson Davis' visit to the important port of Wilmington and his inspection of the Cape Fear River defenses. See Civil war re-enactors and demonstrations of artillery and infantry drills in this free program at Fort Fisher State Historic Site (610 Fort Fisher Boulevard South) in Kure Beach.


Blood and War at My Doorstep

For this series lecture at Historic Bath, “Blood and War at My Doorstep: Some North Carolina Women During the War,” author and researcher Brenda Chambers McKean shares how citizens reacted on the home front when their soldiers marched to the War Between the States. Some women worked through "Aid Societies"; others did whatever they had to do to survive. Period newspaper accounts and unpublished letters help tell the story. The free lecture is from 10-11:30 a.m. at the state historic site’s visitor center, 207 Carteret Street.

The annual "Military Timeline” living history program at Fort Dobbs in Statesville celebrates Veterans Day weekend with free activities exploring military history over the past 300 years. Visitors can see Cherokee warriors, Civil War Confederate and Union soldiers, WWII G.I.'s and grunts from the Vietnam War, among others, and learn how their uniforms, equipment and experiences have changed in three centuries. Weapons firing demonstrations are featured both days at the state historic site, 438 Fort Dobbs Road.


Defending New Bern: 300 Years of Stewardship

On Veterans Day Tryon Palace in New Bern presents "Defending New Bern: 300 Years of Stewardship,” a salute to the military men and women who have defended eastern North Carolina over three centuries. Admission is free for all active-duty and military veterans with the presentation of their military ID, and their immediate family members get discounted admission to Tryon Palace and its N.C. History Center, 529 South Front Street. 


Tryon’s Tales for Tots: A Civil War Thanksgiving

Tryon Palace offers "A Civil War Thanksgiving” in its “Tales for Tots” series. Preschoolers and parents will learn about Thanksgiving in Union-occupied New Bern during the Civil War by visiting the Hay House and helping to make a recipe on the 19th-century wood stove. Fee is $6 per child with one accompanying adult free; fee for additional adults is $6. The Tryon Palace historic site is at 529 South Front Street.

Tryon Palace in New Bern explores regional Civil War heritage in "Civil War Weekend” programs. Through costumed interpreters and exhibits learn about the establishment of the nearby James City community and the participation of U.S. Colored Troops stationed in New Bern. Paid admission is required to the historic site at 529 South Front Street.

Author Brian Steel Wills, director of the Civil War Center at Kennesaw State University (Kennesaw, Ga.), will discuss and sign copies of his book, “Gone with the Glory: The Civil War in Cinema.” The free lecture is at 2 p.m. at the Museum of the Albemarle, 501 South Water Street, Elizabeth City. Wills is also a professor of history at the university.

The 24th Annual Christmas Open House at Somerset Place in Creswell explores simple seasonal pleasures on a 19th-century plantation, with traditional greenery decorations and Christmas arrangements adorning the site buildings. Take self-guided tours of the former plantation while enjoying holiday music, plus complimentary samplings of homemade sweets, hot spiced tea, and old-fashioned black-eyed peas cooked over an open fire and served with hearth-cooked, buttery "Somerset cornbread." This free program is from 1-4 p.m. at the state historic site (one of the upper South's largest plantations during the Civil War) at 2572 Lake Shore Road.

Celebrate an 1870s Christmas during evening "Christmas by Candlelight" tours at Duke Homestead State Historic Site in Durham. Free holiday tours feature period decorations, caroling, dances, hot apple cider and other goodies from 7-9 p.m. at the state historic site, 2828 Duke Homestead Road. Washington Duke started a farm operation here in 1852 that became a major tobacco production empire after the Civil War created a target audience for his “bright leaf” products.

Bentonville Battlefield near Four Oaks recreates a traditional Civil War Christmas for “A Civil War Christmas Open House.” Visitors can enjoy cookies and cider while listening to period music during this free program from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the state historic site, 5466 Harper House Road. Costumed military interpreters discuss how the common soldier spent his holiday furlough time with friends and family. Costumed interpreters decorate the Harper farmhouse kitchen using natural materials including holly, magnolia, fruits and popcorn strands.

Celebrate the Christmas season in Kure Beach at this Civil War fort’s annual Holiday Open House. The free program at this state historic site (1610 Ft. Fisher Boulevard South) includes music, decorations, refreshments and gift store discounts. For most of the Civil War, Fort Fisher kept the Wilmington port open to blockade-runners supplying necessary goods to Confederate armies inland, but its defeat in January 1865 after an amphibious assault helped seal the fate of the Confederacy.

"Christmas in the Carolinas during the Civil War” explores traditional 19-century traditions at Bennett Place State Historic Site in Durham. Civilians and soldiers will enjoy cooking, music, decorating, caroling, a visit by Old St. Nick and the annual roasting of the hog’s head during the free program at this Civil War battlefield (4409 Bennett Memorial Road), scene of the war’s largest troop surrender. The kids can write letters to Old St. Nick and make Christmas ornaments. Refreshments include hot apple cider and Christmas cookies. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. December 14 and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. December 15.


Real to Reel: The Making of ‘Gone with the Wind’

The Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City will show the film “Gone with the Wind” at 2 p.m. as the finale to its exhibit “Real to Reel: The Making of ‘Gone with the Wind.’ ” The exhibit showcases authentic memorabilia -- costumes, screen tests, scene props, a script, Vivien Leigh's Academy Award and more than 120 other items -- from the James Tumblin collection. For this day only, admission to the exhibit is free and gift shops items related to the Civil War and “Gone with the Wind” are discounted 10% discount. The history museum is located at 501 South Water Street.
