October 2013: ECSU Lyceum Series - orchestra, gospel, dance and theater

ECSU Lyceum Series includes orchestra, gospel, dance and theater

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE----The Lyceum Committee at Elizabeth City State University will present four shows during the 2013 -2014 season in the auditorium of the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. The admission fee is $10 for the general public and $5 for students and children under 12 year of age. See the list below for more details:

Time and date:   7 p.m. on October 9
Performers: Chamber Orchestra Kremlin
Event description: The program will feature music from Edward Elgar, Dmitri Shostakovich, J.S. Bach and Antonin Dvořák. 
Since its formation in the late 1991 in Moscow, the orchestra has performed over 1400 concerts -- nearly 600 in Moscow, the rest on tours in 24 countries of Europe, North and South America and the Far East.  The orchestra has recorded over 30 CDs, receiving widespread international acclaim and awards such as the Diapason d'Or in France, Critics Choice in London's Gramophone and in the New York Times, Record of the Year in Hong Kong and others.  Of about 900 compositions in the orchestra's repertoire over 20 were written especially for the orchestra by composers from Russia, Europe and the USA.  For more information on the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, see  www.kremlin.com

Performers: Deitrich Haddon, of Detroit, Michigan; local singers United Women of Praise, and “Essence of Praise,” ECSU’s gospel choir
Event description: Enjoy “An evening of Gospel,” music featuring two local choirs, United Women of Praise, and Essence of Praise and the host for the evening, Mike Chandler, owner & president/CEO of the REJOICE! Musical Soulfood Gospel Radio Network. ECSU will also welcome to the stage contemporary gospel artist, producer and actor Deitrich Haddon. Haddon, 40, has performed with choirs since his youthful days in Detroit and as a solo performer to win awards and national acclaim.

Performers: The Lula Washington Dance Theatre
Event description: The Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT) is a Los Angeles-based repertoire dance ensemble that performs innovative and provocative choreography by its founder and artistic director Lula Washington. The company tours internationally and has been received with acclaim and admiration. Lula Washington has steadfastly focused on using dance to explore social and humanitarian issues, including aspects of African-American history and culture.

LWDT was founded in 1980 by Lula and Erwin Washington in the inner city area of South Los Angeles, California. Since then, LWDT has risen to become one of the most admired African-American contemporary dance companies in the West – known for powerful, high-energy dancing, unique choreography, and exceptional educational residencies.
The company is composed of young, athletic dancers, many of whom were groomed in Lula Washington’s inner city dance studio. Performers: Virginia Stage Company presents one of William Shakespeare’s most popular tragedies, “Hamlet.”
Event description: Virginia Stage Company is the region’s only fully professional resident theater company, serving an audience of over 90,000 annually. Originally founded as The Norfolk Theatre Center in 1968, the Company changed its name to Virginia Stage Company and took on its present form in 1979. VSC’s mission is to "enrich, educate and entertain the region by creating and producing theatrical art of the highest quality and worthy of national prominence."
