FOUR VIKINGS; HEAD COACH RECEIVE WEEKLY HONORS

ECSU Closes Out 2009 Season with Best Overall Record in CIAA East

HAMPTON, VA - Elizabeth City State head coach Waverly Tillar and four members of the Viking football team have garnered CIAA Honors for the final week of the season as released by the conference office Monday morning.

For Waverly Tillar it represents his second honor of the 2009 season. This past Saturday the Vikings played spoiler for Virginia Union by defeating the Panthers 21-13 in Richmond, VA. The win forced a three-way tie in the CIAA East which was later won by Bowie State via a tiebreaker on Sunday.

Dewitt Dixon and Terry Griffin have been named CIAA Linebacker and Defensive Lineman of the Week, respectively. Dixon, who hails from Charlotte, NC had a career high 12 tackles (8 solo, 4 assisted) as the Vikings' held the Panthers scoreless in the second half the game. Griffin also had career day as he snagged the first interception of his career, which he returned for 33 yards. He also had a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, 1 sack for a loss of 7 yards and a QB hurry to go along with 4 tackles (2 solo, 2 assisted); including two tackles for a loss of 12 yards. The Panthers crossed mid-field only one time in the second half.

Daronte McNeill and Daniel Mendez round out this week’s honorees. McNeill kept the Panther defense off balance with his third 100+ rushing game of the season. He finished with 117 yards on a career high 27 carries. His longest run was for 29 yards and he also caught a pass for 16 yards. Mendez was 3-for-3 in extra point attempts and booted a career long 67 yard punt in the first quarter versus Virginia Union.
