Whether you Pedal or Paddle, Make Elizabeth City, N.C. your Headquarters for Spring Sporting Events

(Elizabeth City, N.C, April 7, 2014) – Whether you pedal or paddle, prefer the open road or tranquil waterway, the Elizabeth City area has two spring events to please both sporting types—the Tarwheel Century Ride, April 26, and Paddle for the Border, May 3.

Bicyclists can choose from 33-, 62- and 100-mile rides along rural roads when they register for the Tarwheel Century Ride, now in its 21st year. Organized by the River City Cycling Club, this year’s ride will cover new scenic routes through Camden County—with some of the best “support and gear” stops ever (deviled eggs, smoothies!). Pre-register online, or sign up on site the day of the event.

One of North America’s great wetland forests is the backdrop for Paddle for the Border. The leisurely paddling event takes kayak and canoe enthusiasts 7.5 miles along the historic Dismal Swamp Canal, from the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center in South Mills, N.C. to the Dismal Swamp Canal Boat Ramp in Chesapeake, Va. At this date, registrations are still being accepted at the boat ramp site.

Elizabeth City is ideally suited to accommodate sports enthusiasts for both events. Check the city’s lodging and dining guide for accommodations and a great place to grab a bite. Known as the “Harbor of Hospitality,” Elizabeth City is located halfway between Norfolk, Va., and North Carolina’s Outer Banks. In addition to biking and paddling, visitors can explore Elizabeth City’s downtown waterfront with visits to the Museum of the Albemarle, Port Discover Hands-on Science Center and the Center at Arts of the Albemarle, in addition to self-guided walking tours, shops and restaurants. To plan an itinerary visit www.DiscoverElizabethCity.com.
