Family Fishing Dayat Second Saturday Science

Elizabeth City, NC —Join Katy Potok, a Fisheries Biologist with NC Wildlife Resources Commission, and Terry Boyce for a family fishing day and Angus’ birthday celebration. All fishing materials and lunch will be provided. Bring a chair and sunblock for “Family Fishing DayPort Discover’s Second Saturday Science program, on Saturday, June 14th, from 9:00-11:00am at Mid-Atlantic Christian University Park at the end of Poindexter Street. Registration is REQUIRED for this event as space is limited.

Learn about the special diets and habitats our reptile friends need to survive in captivity. You don’t want to miss “Ssssnakes” Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science program, on Saturday, May 10th, at 11:00 am.

Elizabeth City, NC —Come explore the aquatic critters that live in our neighborhood. We will learn about food chains and how even the smallest creatures play a big role. Come ready to play at “Aqua Friends Port Discover’s latest Toddler Time program, on Thursday, May 15th, at 10:00 am!
 
Toddler Time is a special science program just for preschoolers, ages 3 – 5.  Cost for the program is $5 per child and reservations are required.  Parents or guardians must accompany the child.

Port Discover’s “1st Friday Kids Art-In” 
on Friday, May 2nd
 
Elizabeth City, NC — In conjunction with First Friday ArtWalk, Port Discover offers, “1st Friday Kids Art-In” to its members, on Friday, May 2nd,  from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Parents let your children come to Port Discover to create some kid-friendly art and watch a movie, while you enjoy an evening on the town.  This activity is available to Port Discover members only; however, memberships can be purchased at the door.  Admission is $10 for first child and $5 for each additional child (per family), includes pizza and fruit, for children ages 5 to 12-years-old.  Space is very limited for this event so reservations are encouraged.

Port Discover’s Earth Day Festival!
Elizabeth City, NC — Port Discover’s 3nd Annual Earth Day Festival is set for Saturday, April 26th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at Elizabeth City’s Mariners’ Wharf Park.  This year we will have a bike extravaganza theme, complete with a bike rodeo, bike maintenance station, bicycle powered activities, and more. Bring your bike and helmet to join in the downtown bike ride. The festival will include other Earth friendly activities like environmentally friendly living, recycling, water conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and all natural products. This year will also include live music and Earth friendly food choices. Hands-on activities will be available and free to visitors.  Celebrate Earth Day with us while learning about the environment in a creative, fun, family-friendly atmosphere. This event is partially funded by Vidant Health’s Community Benefits Program.

Elizabeth City, NC — Come check out our chicken incubator at Port Discover as they begin to develop baby chicks. Mason Lawrence from the 4-H will be teaching an exciting class on embryology. This egg-citing class is sure to warm your heart while expanding your mind. This event is funded in part by the NC Science Festival. You don’t want to miss “Embryology 101” Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science program, on Saturday, April 12th, at 11:00 am.

A hands-on science museum for the kid in all of us, Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits.  Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools.  Port Discover is also a member of ASTC and the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

Port Discover’s Science Café Presents
Bird’s the Word
 
Do you like great conversation, intriguing topics, and a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy it all in?  If so, Port Discover’s Science Café is the perfect event for you to attend!  Our Science Café is a monthly event where participants are given the opportunity to learn about and discuss science topics presented by local experts!
 
A variety of local presenters will be discussing everything from chickens to homing pigeons to red tail hawks. Come find out what’s going on with the birds in our area. This event is funded in part by the NC Science Festival. Port Discover’s Science Café will be at our NEW spring location at Mamasita’s Restaurant on Thursday, April 10th, at 7:00 pm.
 
The public is invited to come and join in what is sure to be a lively discussion.  Tables are on a first come, first served basis. Fun for Girl Scouts and their parents!  While the girls are enjoying all that Port Discover has to offer, their parents can go on a tour of Downtown Elizabeth City.  Charlotte Underwood, Director of the Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau will be giving a tour of the Downtown area.  Visit the many shops, galleries and restaurants!

Love your Planet!  Come explore the life of a bug and the natural world around us. Nurture your inner scientist while caring for our planet.

It's a Buggy World - Dive into a buggy world at Port Discover. Live a
day in the life of a bug and discover the important roles they play in our environment.

Flower Power - Discover the amazing power of flowers in our Kid's
Grow Garden and explore the many ways flowers can be used in your everyday life.

Girl Scout Cadettes:
Tree-rrific. Come learn about the many tree species that surround
us in northeastern North Carolina. Explore the canopies above and take a close look into the world of forestry.
