The Museum of the Albemarle is looking for Volunteers to work with the Education Department. Interested individuals can sign up on Wednesday, September 26 at the Museum from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Any help is greatly appreciated. Contact the Education Department at 252-335-1453 for details.

News from Port Discover
Elizabeth City, NC — Port Discover has become a partner for the national “Take A Child Outside” week, September 24 – 30. During the week people are invited to make a pledge to take a child outside to experience the natural world. As part of the week-long program, Port Discover is hosting an afterschool nature walk on Thursday, September 27 at 4:00 pm. Dr. George Taylor, environmental educator and proprietor of NC EcoTours, will guide children on a nature walk within walking distance of Port Discover.
Reservations are requested for the Take A Child Outside nature walk, September 27. To reserve a spot, contact Port Discover at 252-338-6117. The program is free.
For other opportunities and suggestions for encouraging children in the outdoors, visit http://www.takeachildoutside.org/. This effort was inspired by the book Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. Port Discover will also have suggestions and recommendations available in the Center. In North Carolina, “Take A Child Outside” week is being coordinated by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.
A Day on the River Featuring the Classic Moth Boat
On sale now and throughout the day are limited edition t-shirts featuring the classic moth boat at $15.00 each.
A Museum benefit dinner will begin at 5:00 pm. Tickets are available through the Museum at $10.00 each. All proceeds from the benefit dinner and the sale of t-shirts and other memorabilia will benefit the Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle.

Pasquotank Arts Council Gallery - New Exhibit

A new exhibit is running from September 9th - October 5th. Featuring over 100 original paintings!!
On Sunday, September 9th from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm, there will be an opening reception for this new exhibit at the PAC Gallery, located at 609 East Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Come join in the fun and check out the paintings!!

Free showing of DVD biography of local resident Alex Haley at new Witherspoon Library, Monday 7 PM

The program will consist of a DVD on the life of Alex Haley, an American biographer, scriptwriter and novelist, whose most famous work is Roots. Mr. Haley was a student at Elizabeth City Teachers College from 1937 until 1939. Haley's father taught agriculture at Elizabeth City Teachers College before during and after Alex's years there as a student. During WWII Alex enlisted in the Coast Guard. He learned to write professionally onboard ships and later writing officially for the Coast Guard. Today, a cutter ship serving with the Coast Guard is christened with his name. The film will be biographical and will include excerpts from the last forum Alex Haley presented. You are encouraged to bring guests.
Contact the library first at 252-335-2473 to assure space will be available for your party. The room can hold no more than about 50 persons comfortably.
