Port Discover Partners with Take A Child Outside Week, September 24 – 30
Elizabeth City, NC — Port Discover has become a partner for the national “Take A Child Outside” week, September 24 – 30. During the week people are invited to make a pledge to take a child outside to experience the natural world. As part of the week-long program, Port Discover is hosting an afterschool nature walk on Thursday, September 27 at 4:00 pm. Dr. George Taylor, environmental educator and proprietor of NC EcoTours, will guide children on a nature walk within walking distance of Port Discover.

Reservations are requested for the Take A Child Outside nature walk, September 27. To reserve a spot, contact Port Discover at 252-338-6117. The program is free.

For other opportunities and suggestions for encouraging children in the outdoors, visit http://www.takeachildoutside.org/. This effort was inspired by the book Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. Port Discover will also have suggestions and recommendations available in the Center. In North Carolina, “Take A Child Outside” week is being coordinated by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

A Day on the River Featuring the Classic Moth Boat

The Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle invite you to participate in the 19th annual “A Day on the River featuring the Classic Moth Boat” Saturday September 15. Free family activities begin at 10:00 am on the Museum Green with children’s crafts such as making a sail boat, a pirate hat, designing a pirate flag and learning to talk like a pirate. Inside the Gaither Auditorium from 11:00 am-1:00 pm enjoy a book reading and signing of "Lindy Lobster" with popular Outer Banks author Suzanne Tate. The Regatta begins at 11:00 am, and races will continue throughout the day featuring classic moth boats and classes for other small boats. At 1:00 pm inside the Auditorium Kevin Duffus will present a lecture: "War Zone: World War II off North Carolina’s Outer Banks."

On sale now and throughout the day are limited edition t-shirts featuring the classic moth boat at $15.00 each.

A Museum benefit dinner will begin at 5:00 pm. Tickets are available through the Museum at $10.00 each. All proceeds from the benefit dinner and the sale of t-shirts and other memorabilia will benefit the Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle.

The Golden Eagles held the visitors from North Carolina without an offensive score during the game's first 57 minutes and got a pair of short Josh Culbertson touchdown rushes. Elizabeth City State pulled with 17-8 on a 65-yard Rayburn Morris to Casey Owens touchdown pass with 2:53 left, but the Golden Eagles ran out the clock thanks to four Culbertson rushes that led to a pair of game-clinching first downs. Charleston led 3-2 in a low-scoring first half as Wes Sherrill booted a 22-yard field goal for the Golden Eagles.
