October 13th - Second Saturday Science


Kids Encouraged to Observe “Amoebas in Motion” at Second Saturday Science, October 13

Elizabeth City, NC— Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science will focus on “Amoebas in Motion” on Saturday, October 13 at 9:30 am and 11:00 am. The program will look at the microscopic organisms that live in the rivers and waterways around the Albemarle and consider why these tiny creatures are important. During the program, children will gather samples from the river, prepare slides for the microscope, and observe the movements of microscopic creatures such as amoeba and paramecium. Dr. Jeffrey Rousch, assistant professor of biology at Elizabeth City State University, will direct the program.

The programs are appropriate for children in Kindergarten through Fifth grades. Second Saturday Science is free, thanks to our sponsor, Gateway Bank.

Programs are scheduled for 9:30 am and 11:00 am. Due to limited space, reservations are required. Please call 252-338-6117 for registration.

Port Discover Marks Child Health Month with Health-Focused Activities

Elizabeth City, NC — October is Child Health Month and Port Discover has scheduled a month of health-focused activities for children and their families.

Port Discover, in partnership with the UNC-Chapel Hill/Elizabeth City State University Doctor of Pharmacy Partnership Program, will present a series of Thursday afternoon children’s health programs. Michelle Morrison, a third-year pharmacy student, will be at Port Discover to talk about Germs! Ms. Morrison will work with kids on what germs are, where germs grow, and how to avoid them. Activities will include going on a “Germ Hunt”, making a Petri dish culture of germs, and participating in an experiment about effective hand washing. Ms. Morrison will be at Port Discover on October 4, 11 and 25; Dr. Huyla Coker, director of the UNC-Chapel Hill/Elizabeth City State University Doctor of Pharmacy Partnership Program, will present the children’s program on October 18. Activities will run continuously from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm each day. Reservations are not required and the public is invited.

The Make-It-Take-It at Port Discover for October is Let’s Hear it for the Ear! In recognition of Child Health Month, children visiting Port Discover can try a variety of experiments that require use of the senses. Kids will make and take home a model eardrum. The activity is available during the hours Port Discover is open and is free, thanks to a grant from the City of Elizabeth City.

Fred Fearing’s induction into the Louisburg Athletic Hall of Fame

There is a BIG EVENT at Louisburg College on September 28 through 30, 2007. They will host our inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame and Fred Fearing will be inducted. They have a reception and banquet on Friday evening, Sept. 28. This is $100 per ticket. After the dinner, at 8:00 p.m. we will host the induction ceremony. This event is free and open to the public.

3rd Annual Waterway 5K Run/Walk

This morning was the 3rd Annual Waterway 5k Run / Walk Event! The it is organized to promote breast cancer awareness and raise funds for women who can not afford to have a screening mammogram. All of the proceeds from the Waterway5k go to the Albemarle Hospital Foundation and are earmarked for women (and men) in the seven county service area (Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans) who cannot afford a mammogram.
