NAFEX meeting - reminder

Hello fellow gardeners,

This is just reminder that the North American Fruit Explores meeting is this weekend!
We have wonderful program planned, and we welcome you to sharing a great time with other fellow fruit enthusiasts.

--------------------------------

The 2008, Annual NAFEX meeting will take place in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, on July 24-26th.

Our host, Tom Campbell, is the long-time agricultural extension agent there.

Registration and Welcome: We begin on Thursday late afternoon starting at 5:00 PM at the NC Cooperative Extension, Pasquotank Center which is located at 1209 McPherson Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Greet your old friends and make new ones with our usual see-who-is-here session to accommodate tall stories, registration, maps and handouts, etc.

Show and Tell: Bring your fruit and wine samples for tasting and display.

Brags and blunders: Brag about your orchard? Tell about your blunder(s) to save others from the same mistakes. Why not bring a disk with digital pictures for your presentation on the PowerPoint projector. Our host Tom Campbell will serve as MC. This evening ends at 9 PM. DONʼT FORGET YOUʼLL HAVE TO BE BACK EARLY THE NEXT MORNING!

Board Meeting: The annual NAFEX Board meeting is planned there also, starting at around 7 PM in a separate meeting room. Members are invited to attend the important board meeting.

The emphasis of this annual meeting is visiting orchards with nearly two full days of tours.

Friday morning we will leave from the same Extension Center promptly at 8 AM to begin our first set of tours to four locations which includes raised bed fruit culture for physically impaired gardeners, olive, fig, grapes, an apple planting, plum, and mixed brambles wholesale packing operation, and a muscadine grape winery. By noon we will make it to the Clay Foreman Arboretum for a tour and a catered lunch at the Charles Creek Park. Transportation will be vans, or you may car pool. After lunch youʼll have time to stroll the huge new air-conditioned Museum of the Albemarle facing Elizabeth Cityʼs beautiful historic waterfront.

Spouses: For the spouses not interested in the orchard tour there will be simultaneous trip taking in some interesting antique stores and other locations. They will then meet up with the orchard tour for lunch at Charles Creek Park.

Presentations: By 2:30 PM everyone will be back at the Extension Services Auditorium to begin our scientific program, which will last until around 5:30 PM. Tentative speakers are David Vernon of Century Orchards, his subject heirloom apples. Weʼll have a presentation on kiwi fruit production. Ethan Natelson speaks on pears, another subject grafting and budding fruit.

Banquet: The annual banquet follows the scientific presentations, at Addieʼs Acres Farm at 6 PM with a social hour followed by an outdoor Pig Pickinʼ and Buffet. Directions will be given to Addieʼs Acres, only one quarter mile from the Extension Center. You may bring your own alcoholic beverages. Dinner will be served at 7:00PM. Following the outdoor banquet will be the annual business meeting. The Research Fund Committee will present their recommendation to the membership for discussion. The auction will take place after adjournment. Remember to bring something of membership interest to be auctioned off. Felix Cooper will again manage the auction. Inquiries and donations should be directed to Felix or bring your donation with you. If weather is rainy, dinner will be inside the Extension Center. Alcohol will not be permitted on county properties in the unlikely case that we must stay indoors.

Saturday we will be leaving again at 8 AM from the same Pasquotank Extension Center for a second set of tours. Enjoy a ferry ride to Knottʼs Island, which is a very interesting location and will surprise you with what can be grown on what essentially is a giant sand bar. A box lunch will be served there. We will also take in Austinʼs Peach Orchard and Basket Shop, Floyd Watkins ½ acre 60 vine commercial kiwi fruit vineyard, Martinsʼ 20 acre Orchard and Winery which is a pick your own and wine tasting operation, and Moonrise Bay Vineyard, Winery, and Tasting Room. We would leave to return to Elizabeth City by mid-afternoon, but might not be back there until 5-6 PM. You are then on your own for dinner. Vans will be used for transportation or you may follow or car pool. There will be a small per car follow fee to cover miscellaneous tour related expenses.

Please register ahead using the form, it helps those making plans, lowers their anxiety level and saves you money.

The registration fee is $60 per adult which includes Thursday and Friday, Friday and Saturday lunches and the educational program. Registration will be available on site and can be adjusted for those not attending all of the events. We look forward to seeing you there, Thursday, July 24 thru Saturday, July 26, 2008. For those flying in, Elizabeth City is about 45 miles due South of Norfolk, Virginia and the Norfolk International Airport (ORF). Raleigh/Durham Airport (RDU) is about 3.5 hours drive West Southwest of Elizabeth City.

Wayne Newton’s Former Mansion is “Star” of Before-and-After Home Renovation
-- “The Designer House at Bayside Manor” is unique fundraiser for Arts of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, N.C --

(Elizabeth City, N.C., July 18, 2008) – Will Wayne Newton’s former residence exude more of an antebellum air or Vegas-style vibe? Interior design followers will decide when Arts of the Albemarle opens “The Designer House at Bayside Manor” during a gala preview Aug. 1 and for daily tours Aug. 3-17 in Elizabeth City.

Dating to 1856, Bayside Manor was built by Christopher Wilson Hollowell, whose family owned it until 1988. From 1988 to 1996, Las Vegas entertainer Wayne Newton owned the home, but never lived there. The mansion has long been a famous landmark in Elizabeth City.

When the home’s current owners, the Aylsworth family, decided to sell, they approached a local interior design firm about staging the home. Wright Designer owner Holly Wright and fellow designer Camilla Hull had always wanted to create a design home. They believed a fundraising event for Elizabeth City’s Arts of the Albemarle seemed just the ticket.

“Obviously, we’re thrilled,” said Lisa Winslow, executive director of Arts of the Albemarle, a not-for-profit organization which supports the arts in Pasquotank County with a dedicated gallery space and by hosting annual art shows, children’s programs in schools and special events. “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the region’s many talented interior designers, while supporting the arts in Elizabeth City.”

Wright contracted with 15 North Carolina and Virginia interior designers, artisans and landscape architects to transform the 5,000 square-foot Greek revival mansion into a design showcase.

When the renovation is completed, Bayside Manor will feature 18 refurbished and decorated design areas, including a grand foyer, gentlemen’s library and a fantasy playroom, among other rooms. A Northeastern High School student, with help from her teacher, is redesigning one area of the home as a senior project.

The gala preview, Aug. 1, will feature live music by the jazz ensemble Connected, food by Montero’s restaurant and spirits by The City Wine Sellar. Tickets for the gala are $100 each and can be purchased by calling at (252) 330-1333 or Arts of the Albemarle at (252) 338-6455. Gala guests will have the opportunity to meet the designers and discuss their work.

From Aug. 3 – 17, “The Designer House at Bayside Manor” tours will be held Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door and can be purchased in advance for $12 by calling Arts of the Albemarle at (252) 330-1333. A two-week pass is also available for $24 and allows ticket holders access to such special on-site events as a fashion show, butterfly gardening workshop and a harp concert. The boutique at Bayside will feature a “garden theme” displaying original paintings, prints, photography and handcrafts for purchase by Arts of the Albemarle artists and craftsman. For additional information go to www.BaysideManorTour.com.

Newton, known for such hit songs as “Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast,” and “Danke Schoen” is the honorary chairman of the committee, but will not be present at the preview gala. His Web site notes he will be performing that evening at the MGM Grand.

Bayside Designer House Getaway Packages

The Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is offering a special Bayside Designer House Getaway package Aug. 3-17. Rates start at $180 (plus tax) for a two-night stay based on double occupancy. The package includes accommodations and two tickets to the Designer House tour. When booking, guests may add on a horse-drawn carriage tour of the Elizabeth City waterfront and dining reservations. For details, call the Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-866-ECity-4U (1-866-324-8948) or (252) 335-5330 or go to www.DiscoverElizabethCity.com.

Proceeds from “The Designer House at Bayside Manor” ticket sales will benefit Arts of the Albemarle. The not-for-profit arts organization will soon relocate to an expanded, three-story building across the street from its current Elizabeth City location. With five times the space, the new facility will feature a 10,000 square-foot gallery, meeting and banquet space, a catering kitchen, classrooms and a small theater.

Elizabeth City is located in northeastern North Carolina on the Pasquotank River, halfway between Norfolk, Va., and the Outer Banks. Elizabeth City has six National Register Historic Districts and is home to the Museum of the Albemarle, Arts of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City State University Planetarium and Port Discover Hands-on Science Center. Nature-based travelers are drawn to the area’s proximity to the Dismal Swamp and the abundance of outdoor recreational offerings.

US Army Corps of Engineers - DSC Public Notice

Dismal Swamp Canal Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Restricted Lock Operating Hours

July 16, 2008 - Beginning July 23, 2008 and until further notice, the locks at Deep Creek, Virginia and South Mills, North Carolina, will be operated only at 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, 7 days a week. The drawbridges adjacent to these locations will be operated in coordination with the locks.

The operating hours are being reduced from 4 per day to 2 per day due to limited rainfall, pumping operations to control the Dismal Swamp fire, and subsequent low water levels in Lake Drummond and the Dismal Swamp. This action is being taken in coordination with the Fish and Wildlife Service to conserve the available water supply in the Great Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge. The restriction is expected to be temporary until sufficient rain falls in the Lake Drummond watershed to recharge the swamp.

For vessel that are unable to comply with the reduced schedule, the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal, through the Great Bridge Lock in Chesapeake, Virginia, will be open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Operators will monitor Channel 13.
