Historic Building Enjoys Second Act As Art Center's New Home in Elizabeth City, NC

(Elizabeth City, NC, March 31, 2009) – For the past nine years, the old Lowry-Chesson Building stood shuttered and vacant on Elizabeth City's attractive Main Street thoroughfare – a far cry from its days as a turn-of-the-century opera house and a flagship department store.

This spring, the handsome three-story, red brick building re-opened with great fanfare as The Center, the stylish new home for Arts of the Albemarle (AOA) and a climatic second act for the 1897 building.

The $3.2 million project was much anticipated by the AOA board of directors, which raised most of the money through private donations. [read more]
