Annual Scholarship Luncheon Held at COA

TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More. This was the theme for this year's Scholarship Luncheon held in COA's Foreman Center on the Elizabeth City Campus. The luncheon provides scholarship recipients a chance to meet those who helped start and fund the scholarships that help to pay for their education.

Melissa Longerbeam, a first year Associate Degree Nursing student, receives aid through the Davenport Scholarship, as well as the Bonnie Hawkins Memorial Scholarship. Longerbeam had the chance to meet Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Hawkins, who started the Bonnie Hawkins Memorial Scholarship in 1994, in memory of their daughter who passed away from breast cancer. Bonnie was a nursing graduate of East Carolina University and the scholarship in her name is given annually to a student in the Associate Degree Nursing program. Ann Hawkins stated about the luncheon, "It's a really great opportunity to meet the students that our scholarship is assisting. The students keep in touch by writing us and telling us of their achievements."

Jeff Carter, Associate Professor/Program Coordinator for Health/Wellness and Physical Education, was the guest speaker at the luncheon. Carter stated, "Now, more than ever, citizens need college education and the assistance to pay for it. Don't take the support for granted and be sure to thank your donor." He pointed out that private donors provide over $175,000 annually for students to receive their education at College of The Albemarle.
