Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble performs January 31

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — The Lyceum Committee at Elizabeth City State University presents the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble at 4:00 pm on January 31 at the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for students and children.

The Ensemble is comprised of nine musicians and dancers under the leadership of Artistic Director, Chuck Davis, a musical director; a 12-member Board of Directors, committed to the further development of the ensemble; and a four-person administrative staff. The ensemble’s mission is to preserve and to share the finest traditions of African and African American dance and music through research, education and entertainment. With the motto, "Peace, love, respect for everybody," the ensemble celebrates traditional African culture, aesthetics and values as resources to encourage interracial cooperation, cross-cultural understanding and societal analysis.

Dr. Charles “Chuck” Davis is Founder and Artistic Director of the African American Dance Ensemble and the former New York based DanceAfrica. A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Davis attended Howard University and majored in Theater/Dance. Davis’ list of awards includes the Triangle Community Foundation Kathryn H. Wallace Award for Artists In Community Service (2000); the Dance Heritage Coalition recognition as one of 100 Irreplaceable Dance Treasures in the United States (2000); the Dance for the Planet award (1998 and 2001); the Durham Human Relations Commission’s Advocacy Award (2002); the Artist of the Year award by Dance USA; the 2002 National Governors’ Association Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts; a citation from Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus.
