ECSU McNair Scholars advance to graduate schools

ECSU McNair Scholars advance to graduate schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- In 2009, ECSU received $252,045 in additional funds for Dr. Cheryl Lewis, principle investigator/director for the TRIO programs, to continue the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program at ECSU.

It’s the 15th year the program has been offered at ECSU. This program prepares participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. A major goal is to increase the number of students choosing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors and the number of students earning doctoral degrees. Of particular interest, are first generation college students.

"We, ECSU faculty and staff, provided the research opportunities, and support services to nurture their personal and professional growth," Lewis said. "We brought motivational speakers that students could identify with and benefit from their expertise. They traveled to professional conferences, visited graduate schools, scientific labs, historical landmarks and well as exposed them to the arts."

McNair Scholars, a common term for program participants, are progressing:
  • 193 graduated ECSU.

  • 133 have been accepted into graduate school.

  • 70 have received a master’s degree.

  • Three have earned doctorate degrees.

  • One earned a law degree.

  • One earned a medical degree.

"Over the 15 years, we’ve had some very bright and talented students," Lewis said. "All they need is the desire to go and we will provide the mechanism to get them there."
