LADY VIKINGS PULL AWAY LATE; TOP JOHNSON C. SMITH 60-50

ECSU Shoots Earns Season Split, Capture First Win over JCSU Since 2006-07 Season

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Three Lady Vikings tallied double figures as Elizabeth City State University defeated Johnson C. Smith University 60-50 Saturday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

The win represents ECSU’s first victory over Johnson C. Smith since 2006-07 where they defeated JCSU three times, twice in the regular season and once in the semi-finals of the 2007 CIAA Tournament.

Three starters landed in double figures for ECSU as Kenyatta Gill led all scorers with 15 points while Joyce Freeman and April Whitaker contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Lady Vikings shot a season high 48.1% from the floor, including a 53.8% display in the second half after holding a slim 26-25 lead at the intermission.

JCSU’s Sheria Hatcher gave the Lady Golden Bulls a brief 27-26 lead to open the second half at the 19:10 mark. Then back-to-back baskets by April Whitaker put ECSU ahead for good. JCSU (10-3, CIAA 4-3) would get to within a point twice more however ECSU, behind its hot shooting pushed the lead to nine (52-43) with 2:36 remaining. Over that same span the Lady Golden Bulls managed only one field goal and would go on to register their final seven points from the free throw line.

Shakira Clarke was the high woman for JCSU with 9 points off the bench.
