ELIZABETH CITY, NC-The Bowie State University Bulldogs held on to defeat Elizabeth City State 53-51 Tuesday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.

Neither team led by more than three points in the second half until back to back scores by Travis Hyman gave the Bulldogs a 52-45 lead with 1:42 to go. Then Quintin Spady hit a three-pointer to pull ECSU to within four with 49 seconds to go. The Bulldogs went up a point after Armond Hill converted one of two from the line with 37 seconds left. ECSU continued to stretch the game, fouling after a missed three-pointer by B.J. Williams in hopes of more free throw misses by the Bulldogs.

Jamal Hyman would oblige with two misses and Williams’ unconventional three-point play came after hitting a running jumper and converting the free throw with 12 seconds to go. With the score 53-51 BSU’s Corey Stevens clanked two shots from the charity stripe however both Angelo Sharpless and Paul Goldsmith’s game tying jumpers missed their mark moving the Bulldogs’ record to 13-7 overall, 11-5 in the CIAA.

ECSU had their chances but struggled from the floor in second half shooting a cold 8-33 (24%) in the two-point defeat. Duke Crews led all scorers with a game high 20 points as BSU improves to 3-1 in the CIAA East.
