ECSU Closes Game on 9-0 Run To Earn Season Split with Lady Bulldogs

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Joyce Freeman’s jumper with 43 seconds left proved to be the go ahead score as Elizabeth City State University edged Bowie State University 55-51 Tuesday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.

The Lady Bulldogs (12-6, CIAA 12-4) turned the ball over on their ensuing possession and Freeman closed the deal with two free throws for the final point span. She finished the game as the only Lady Viking in double figures with 13 points.

After trailing buy eight (28-20) at the intermission the Lady Bulldogs opened the second half on a 17-5 run to take a 37-33 lead with 13:53 to go. The Lady Vikings suffered through a seven minute scoring slump until Crystal Smith’s layup pulled ECSU to within a basket (37-35) at the 9:48 mark.

The Lady Bulldogs pushed the lead back to eight with 5:32 left to play right before ECSU went on an 11-4 run and after by back-to-back jumpers by Shaquella Johnson, BSU’s lead was down to one, 51-50. Freeman heroics followed giving ECSU the win as the Lady Bulldogs went scoreless the game’s final 2:16.

Teaunsha Robinson led all scorers with 22 points on 10-16 shooting from the field. The Lady Bulldogs slip to 2-2 in the CIAA East while the Lady Vikings improve to 2-3 in Divisional play.

ECSU (14-8, CIAA 9-8) will travel to Virginia Union University on Thursday, February 11 to close out their season series with the Lady Panthers. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm at Barco-Stevens Hall. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
