CHARLOTTE, NC-The Saint Augustine’s College Falcons captured their first CIAA Championship since 1997 with a 63-59 win over Elizabeth City State Saturday at Time Warner Arena.
Tournament MVP Chris Jordan led the way for the Falcons (26-4) with a game high 20 points.
In the second half the Vikings led the all but the final 2:45 of the game. The Falcons rallied from a seven point deficit to knot the game at 51 apiece on a layup by Hayward Fain with 3:43 remaining. Fain followed with a go ahead layup for SAC’s first lead of the second stanza before Trent Bivens responded with a score to tie the game at 53 all.
Then with 1:51 left the Falcons reeled off 10 unanswered, with 8 coming courtesy of MVP Jordan for a 63-53, to secure the win. ECSU’s Angelo Sharpless nailed a three and converted an unconventional 3-point play in the waning 30 seconds for the game’s final point spread.
Although they were held without a 3-point field goal for the first time this season, the Falcons dominated the boards with a 42-28 edge, 15 of which came off the offensive glass.
