FALCONS, TROJANS SET TO MEET IN CIAA BASEBALL FINAL

St. Augustine’s and Virginia State To Meet in Rematch of 2009 Championship

April 16, 2010

PETERSBURG, VA - After two days of CIAA Baseball action the Saint Augustine’s College Falcons find themselves in familiar territory. Like throughout the regular season and the tournament’s duration the Falcons sit in first place and remain the lone team without a loss since Championship play began on Thursday.

However standing in the way of the Falcons first baseball crown since 1999 is Virginia State University, the three-time defending CIAA Champions. The Trojans, who fell in the tournament opener in a 7-3 loss to Chowan University, exacted their revenge against the Hawks on Friday with a 10-4 win in the elimination bracket. Trailing 4-0 through 5 complete innings the Trojans exploded in the top of the 6th scoring 8 runs on 5 hits and one Hawk error. The highlight of the inning was the three run homer by Shawn McEnhimer, his second long ball of the tournament.

Although they scattered 11 hits against the Trojans, the Hawks stranded 11 runners on base as they were outscored 10-0 after the fifth inning.

In Friday’s opener versus St. Augustine’s the Hawks never found an offensive rhythm as they dropped a 10-1 decision. Alex Didio went the distance for the Falcons allowing 5 hits while his defense held the Hawks to one run which came in the top of the 4th inning.

Chowan ends their first CIAA baseball season at 23-18-1 overall.
