LADY VIKINGS RALLY PAST CHOWAN IN FIVE SETS

ECSU Battles Back From 2-1 Set Deficit; Takes Over First Place in the Northern Division

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings won three the hard way, battling back from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat Chowan University 3-2 (17-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 15-10) Tuesday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.

With the win the Lady Vikings take control of the first place in the CIAA Northern Division and are the only CIAA team that remains unbeaten in conference play (9-0). ECSU is currently riding a nine-game win streak.

The loss is the first by Chowan (7-5, CIAA 7-1), the defending conference champions, to a CIAA opponent this season and only their second CIAA loss since joining the conference last season.

Trailing two games to one, ECSU seized momentum in game four with a balanced team effort, totaling 12 kills against only 3 hitting errors. Although the Hawks led the Lady Vikings 43-33 in kills over the first three sets, their offense stalled in the pivotal set four with 10 hitting errors and three service errors. ECSU also made their presence felt defensively at the net in with 4 of their total 8 team blocks for the match coming in set four.

ECSU was dealt a temporary setback in the decisive game five when All-Conference middle blocker Xie’Ara Maybank-Smallings suffered an injury with the score 1-0 in favor of the Lady Vikings. ECSU would go on to score 9 of the game’s first 12 points and would later seal the match 15-10. Chelsey Campbell, who replaced Maybank-Smallings in the lineup helped in the closeout along with Samarri Griffin and Whitney Green, each contributing 2 kills apiece.

For the match Green and Scott paced ECSU with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. The Hawks’ Victoria Lewis led all players with a match high 21 kills.
