October 23, 2010
BOWIE, MD - Bowie State University held on for a 20-12 CIAA Northern Division win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at Bulldogs Stadium.
Statistically the Vikings had their way with the Bulldogs on Saturday rolling up a season high 507 yards of total offense. Defensively the Vikings held BSU scoreless in the second half while giving up only 114 total yards over the 3rd and 4th quarters. But ultimately ECSU was not able to overcome mistakes and missed scoring opportunities in Saturday’s contest.
ECSU was 1-3 in red zone chances, fumbled twice at their opponents’ goal line and the extra points of both Viking touchdowns were blocked on Saturday.
The Vikings’ special teams gave up two of the Bulldogs’ (5-4, CIAA 5-1) three scores on Saturday. Delano Johnson blocked a Danny Heimrich punt which was returned 5-yards by Josh Goins for a 7-0 BSU lead with 9:21 left in the opening quarter. With 3:20 left in the first, Clifton Budd added to the Bulldog lead with a 38-yard rushing score, the only touchdown the ECSU defense surrendered on the day.
The Vikings responded on their ensuing possession when a 22 yard scoring run by Kevin Swain capped an 8 play 68 yard drive.
The Bulldogs caught ECSU special teams off guard after lining up for a fake 41 yard field goal attempt; Clifton Budd connected with Derrick McPhearson scoring on a 24-yard pass play as the first half expired.
In his first game back from injury Creven Powell went 20-25 for a season high 304 yards while Dexter Manley hauled in 4 catches for 101 yards. Daronte McNeill finished the day with 155 yards on 34 carries and a touchdown and is only 49 yards away from becoming ECSU’s first 1,000 rusher since the 1994 season.
ECSU (4-4, CIAA 3-2) will host their 2010 Homecoming game this Saturday when they take on Chowan University at Roebuck Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
