ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Daronte McNeill’s record setting performance powered the Elizabeth City State University Vikings to a 55-14 Homecoming win over Chowan University Saturday afternoon at Roebuck Stadium.

The Elizabeth City native, who entered Saturday’s game needing 49 yards to reach 1,000 yards, did just that on a 77-yard run in the second quarter. With that rush he became the first Viking since 1995 to record 1,000 yards in a season. McNeill went on to break for two 97-yard touchdowns and finished the day with a new single game high of 290 yards on 11 carries. With one game left in the regular season, he now has 1,241 yards this season, besting the single season mark of 1,105 set by Jerome Newsome back in 1974.

Behind McNeill’s performance, the Vikings more than doubled the Hawks (3-6, CIAA 3-3) in total offense 465-256.

After the Hawks converted a mishandled punt into a 7-0 lead, ECSU went on a tear scoring on 5 of 8 first half possessions to take a 34-7 halftime lead. The ECSU defense accounted for four scores on Saturday including 2 blocked punts returned for touchdowns(Geno Trundle and Zavis Padgett), a fumble recovery returned for another six (Orlando Barrow) and a 19-yard interception returned for a touchdown by defensive end Malcolm Jenkins. Playing his final home game in a Viking uniform, Jenkins’ interception was the first of his career and he also tallied 3.5 sacks for a loss of 16 yards.

The Vikings (5-4, CIAA 4-2) will close out the season at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 6th. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
