ECSU’s Game Two Rally Falls Short as Chowan Win 11th Straight
April 10, 2011
ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Chowan University Hawks swept their season series with Elizabeth City State University by topping the Vikings 5-0 and 6-4 in CIAA doubleheader action Sunday afternoon.
In game one, the Viking offense never found a rhythm as Hawk pitcher Anthony O’Brien surrendered only two hits in a 5-0 shutout. Chowan seized control when two first inning errors led to a 4-0 lead. The Viking defense held the Hawks scoreless until a RBI single by Justin Bagbey in the 6th accounted for the final point spread.
In the doubleheader’s finale, the Vikings rallied before falling to the Hawks 6-4. Back to back RBI singles by Kyle Meads and Billy Kellum gave ECSU new life with a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 5th, but stranded tree runners when the inning ended. That proved costly when the Hawks tacked on a run in their final two at bats to earn the win. The Vikings led 1-0 entering the top of the 2nd inning but 3 ECSU errors led to a 4-run outburst by Chowan.
ECSU (13-21, CIAA 6-14) will return to action when they travel to take on Saint Paul’s College on Wednesday, April 13th. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Meherrin River Park in Emporia, VA.
