What’s Up at Port Discover

Afterschool Science:
Drop into Port Discover for some afterschool science—featuring a different theme each month. The program is Free and made possible thanks to the City of Elizabeth City.
Thursday, February 28, 4:00 pm : How Does Your Garden Grow?
Join Master Gardeners at Port Discover and uncover what makes gardens grow. Learn the science behind preparing for a spring garden and some tips that will have you on your way to a green thumb.
The Albemarle Hospital Foundation, in collaboration with Vidant Health, is pleased to support Port Discover through their regional Community Benefit Grants Program.


This March there is something for every Port Discover Member!! Each week members will receive a new special!
On Friday, March 1st
Members are invited to not only sign up their child but TODAY ONLY they can bring a child’s friend (non-member) with them for only $5.00 more!

$10 for member’s child & $5 for additional or non-member’s child

1st Friday Kids Art-In:
Children must be age 5 - 12-years-old to participate. Space is very limited and reservations are encouraged. Cost is $10 for first child and $5 for each additional child (per family). Port Discover Membership is Required (Yet you can purchase a membership at the door)
Friday, March 1, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Port Discover offers Kids Night-In during the First Friday Art Walk. Parents let your children come to Port Discover to create some kid-friendly art and watch a movie, while you enjoy an evening on the town.


Second Saturday Science:
Second Saturday Science is Free. Reservations are required.
Saturday, March 9, 11:00 am : Dinosaur Discovery
North Carolina Natural Science Museum will take us on an exploration of the awe-inspiring world of dinosaurs. Learn about their habits and lifestyles while comparing live animals to these prehistoric wonders.


Science Café - Topic: From Planet Earth to Water Street
It's a science program just for the local adult community in an informal, casual restaurant setting, participants will be able to add to the conversation and ask questions. This program is FREE to attend.
Located at La Fogata’s, 109 S. Hughes Blvd.

Thursday, March 14, 7:00 pm
Join Dr. Dean Carpenter and Jim Hawhee with Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership to discuss current changes in water levels and what it means for our coastline.


Toddler Time:
A science program just for preschoolers, ages 3 – 5. Cost for the program is $5 per child and reservations are required. Parents or guardians must accompany the child.
Thursday, March 21, 10:00 am : An Apple A Day
To celebrate National Nutrition month, preschoolers will explore the food pyramid. Children will make a fun placemat to take home for their dinner table to encourage eating from the rainbow.

Thursday, March 28, 4:00 pm : Sssnakes
Learn all about these slithery sensations up-close with a science educator from North Carolina Natural Science Museum. Examine a number of living nonvenomous snakes and discover how to study snakes safely.
