Forty-First Annual Nursing Pinning Ceremony Held at COA

Twenty-seven Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) students received their nursing pins at College of The Albemarle’s (COA’s) forty-first annual pinning ceremony on Thursday evening. Held in the COA Performing Arts Center, the evening ceremony was a traditional service and included pinning lapel pins, lighting nightingale lamps, and taking the International Council of Nurses’ Pledge.

Nursing awards were presented by Dr. Evonne Carter, Vice President of Learning and COA Associate Degree Nursing faculty, Katherine Evans and Dr. Gloria Baker. Academic Recognition Certificates were presented to Lindy Cartwright, Monica Creef, and Brigit Schultz. These graduates maintained a 3.5 grade point average or better throughout their time in the program. The Academic Excellence Award, presented to the graduate with the highest grade point average in the class, was presented to Brigit Schultz. The Dr. L. Everett Sawyer Award, presented to the student who most exemplifies conscientiousness and zeal for learning, was awarded to Ginger Badgley. Students receiving the Dr. Zack D. Owens and Martha Anderson Owens Nursing Endowment Scholarship awards were Kevin Lucas, Tamara Pace, Brigit Schultz, and Chelsea Smith.

A special presentation was made by Dr. Kandi W. Deitemeyer, President of COA. Dr. Deitemeyer presented Chelsea Smith with the North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Award. Every year, each of the 58 community colleges with the state system selects one student for this award. Chelsea was presented with a medallion and plaque.
