- W.C. Witherspoon and Cader Harris captured the diverse spirit of the community by founding the Hope Group in 1993. They believed we had more in common than we had differences. No rules, no regulations but developing simple friendships could bring understanding between individuals. Understanding would bring unity. The Hope Group continues to celebrate diversity, dignity of the individual and promotes unity within our community. The annual Witherspoon-Harris Community Service Award will support the continuation of this philosophy.
- The Witherspoon-Harris Community Service Award was established by the City of Elizabeth City to be presented to individuals in the county and the city who have made a contribution over and above what is normally expected.
