March 2012: Elizabeth City Downtown Street Re-opening Celebration

Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. will be hosting a downtown street re-opening celebration in one week - Wednesday, March 28th from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the intersection of Poindexter Street and Colonial Avenue.

Come participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony, and be entered for some great door prizes! Cupcakes provided by The Cupcakery and beverages provided by Mid-Atlantic Christian University. Please stay and have dinner at one of our many great downtown restaurants.

- Top notch singers and players from Durham, NC, Delta Rae Band, will be gracing our establishment for a series of 3 shows..The reason being is the fact that DRB recently joined "Out'n the Cold" for a performance at the Arts of the Albemarle..Everyone raved about the performance!!..We got the "kids" to agree to do the WED NITE LIVE MUSIC at The Marina, and it sold out in about 2 hours..SO..They agreed to stay over for 2 more nights so that everyone will have the chance to see their performance. Consisting of brother's Ian Holljes on guitar, keyboard and vocals, Eric Holljes on guitar, keyboard and vocals, sister, Brittany Holljes with her powerful vocal ability, Liz Hopkins with her soulful and heartfelt vocals, Grant Alexander Emerson on bass, and Mike McKee on drums and percussion, this band is surely destined to become a household name in the near future!!..As mentioned, the Wed Nite performance is sold out, so if at all possible, please make plans to see this talented group of youngsters.

Growing Your Own Bouquets:
Learn how having a small designated flower bed (3’ x 10’) as a cutting garden is the first step to a season full of gorgeous cut flowers! Following Lisa’s recommendations for easy soil preparations, variety selections, organic methods, and harvesting practices will have your garden producing a bounty of flowers to fill your home and enough to share with friends.

Lisa tells it all when it comes to gardening and cut flowers. Her contagious spirit inspires beginners as well as the seasoned gardener. Lisa’s sustainable and organic gardening experiences have been gathered from everyday life on her cut‐flower farm nestled in the heart of the City of Newport News, Virginia. Lisa’s energy permeates a room; her experience ignites the love of gardening; and her simple.

The Shopping Event:
Immediately following the program you will enjoy shopping from items highlighted during the program. A percentage of each purchases will help cover the cost of the building for the program and to support the Master Gardeners’ Scholarship Fund. All of the products sold by TGW are those used by Lisa in her own commercial cut-flower growing operation. You may use cash, checks and any major credit cards to make purchases. You will have opportunity to shop and ask questions after the program, which lasts 45 minutes to an hour.

Holidays on the Harbor in Downtown -- Enjoy an old fashioned holiday with a nearly month-long celebration in beautiful downtown Elizabeth City! Special events, contests, raffles, discounts, refreshments, and extended hours in many of our unique shops and restaurants.
  • November 27 - December 17 -- Gingerbread Man Search begins! Find the missing Gingerbread men hidden in downtown stores for a chance to be entered into a drawing for a Grand Prize Gift Basket. Forms available in downtown businesses beginning November 27.
  • November 27 - December 17 -- Downtown Rafflemania! Make a qualifying purchase at any participating downtown business and receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win the Grand Prize Gift Basket. The more you shop, the better your odds.
  • Themed Shopping Nights -- Many stores will be staying open later on the following themed nights with specials, activities, and refreshments. Check with your local stores for activities and hours.

    • December 3 -- Date Night
  • December 10 - 17 -- Gingerbread House Contest! Drop off your pre-made Gingerbread House at Port Discover (611 East Main) between December 10 - 17. Houses will be displayed in the storefront until the winner is announced on December 18.

Friday Night Music Series at The City Wine Sellar, Bakery, Deli & Wine Bar – Enjoy acoustic music with local musicians at The City Wine Sellar every Friday Night from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm. There's never a cover charge. Relax and visit with friends, enjoy dinner and drinks in our cozy atmosphere, great for singles, couples, or families. Entertainment 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm; Deli fare served until 9:00 pm.

The Next Stephen King? -- Saturday, December 18th, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. Don't miss an opportunity to purchase an autographed copy of Toby Tate's new book, Diablero, a scary twist on the story of our famous local pirate Blackbeard. Toby will read from his thriller and answer questions.
