ECSU Ends Two Streaks With Tough Road Victory
December 17, 2009
WILSON, NC - The Elizabeth City State Vikings held off a second half surge by Barton College to earn a 72-66 victory over the Bulldogs at Barton Gymnasium.
The win snaps ECSU’s three game losing skid while simultaneously ending the Bulldogs 24 game home stand. Barton had not dropped a game on their home floor since the 2007-08 season.
Barton (5-3) began the game on with a 6-2 lead but ECSU went on a tear scoring 15 unanswered to take the lead for good. The Vikings, who shot a blistering 55% in the first half, led by as many as 22 in the first stanza and held a 40-21 lead at the intermission.
After the break Barton went on a run and with 6:19 left in the contest the Bulldogs had trimmed their deficit to ten points (61-51). With 3:34, left Charles Gamble converted an unconventional three-point play to pull Barton to within three, 65-62. Yet a lay-up by Trent Bivens along with clutch free throws by Paul Goldsmith and B.J. Williams in the final two minutes sealed the game and the win for the Vikings.
Bivens finished with a season high 22 points to lead all scorers while Williams tallied 10 points to round out the Vikings with double figures.
Senior Charles Gamble paced the Bulldogs off the bench posting career highs of 17 points and 17 rebounds.
The Vikings (4-4) will return to action on Saturday night when they take on Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, MD. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
