Vikings Shoot 49% From The Floor in Road Win Over Broncos
January 2, 2010
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Three Vikings registered in double figures as Elizabeth City State University powered past Fayetteville State University Saturday night at Felton J. Capel Arena.
Fayetteville native and Westover High alum Paul Goldsmith made the most of his return home posting his first career double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Vikings also got breakout performances from the freshman tandem of Quintin Spady and Blake Price. Spady, who spent most of the night guarding the league’s top scorer in the Broncos’ Michael Carpenter, went 6-10 from the field including 5 three-pointers for a season best 17 points. His defensive efforts limited Carpenter to just 3-8 shooting en route to a season low 16 points.
Price came off the bench to lead all scorers with 21 points along with 4 assists (0 turnovers) and 2 steals.
After trailing the Vikings 38-26 at the break, the Broncos (3-6, CIAA 0-4) managed to trim the lead to single digits once in the second half when a Carpenter layup made the score 43-34 with 17:12 remaining. ECSU then responded with a 16-6 run to put the game out of reach. Carpenter added 10 rebounds for a double-double and finished 10-12 from the free throw line. As a team the Broncos went to the charity stripe 42 times but were not able to make ground on ECSU as they converted only 22 attempts.
