O F J A Z Z The Jae Sinnett Trio

Two area jazz
greats are hitting the stage of the Maguire Theater next Thursday, April 10th.
The Jae Sinnett Trio, along with Outer Banks jazz artist Laura Martier, will be
performing together in what is sure to be a spectacular show for jazz fans
of all
types.
An award winning
jazz recording artist for nearly thirty years, Jae Sinnett has performed with
Branford and Ellis Marsalis, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Chuck Mangione,
Charlie Byrd, and many others. Both the 1997 release titled “Listen,” as well as
the 2006 release "The Sinnett Hearings" reached number one on the Gavin and
national jazz charts, respectively. Hampton Roads area jazz enthusiasts will
recognize Sinnett as the producer and host of the popular jazz program “Sinnett
in Session” on NPR affiliate WHRV-89.5 in Norfolk, VA, as well as “The R&B
Chronicles” on WSNC-FM in Winston-Salem, NC.
Thursday's performance will feature the trio consisting of Sinnett,
Justin Kauflin, a Thelonius Monk International Jazz Piano Competition finalist
fresh off a world tour with Quincy Jones, as well as bassist Terry Burrell. The
performance will also feature Outer Banks resident and esteemed jazz performer
Laura Martier. Tickets are $15 and are available at AoA (516 E. Main Street,
Elizabeth City) or by calling 252.338.6455. Downtown eateries Cypress Creek
Grill and Sidney’s Bistro will be accepting pre-concert reservations, and a cash
bar will be available at the show.

Welcome spring with two of the area’s favorite artists,
Margie Sawyer and Katherine Wassink. On April 4, First Friday ArtWalk features
the work of Margie
Sawyer in a special exhibit, “Preserving the Places We Love.” The exhibit is
in collaboration with the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, which seeks to
preserve the resources and traditions of the coastal communities of the state. A
portion of the sales revenue from this exhibit will be donated to the North
Carolina Coastal Land Trust. Her painting, “Patterns in the Pasquotank River,”
is featured in the heading above. Margie is an award-winning artist who teaches
painting at College of the Albemarle, as well as providing lessons at her
studio.

N opens April 15th
|
The 2014 Arts of
the Albemarle Annual Photo Competition submission period opens Tuesday, April
15th and will be open through Friday, April 25th. Approved photos will be the
Jenkins Gallery featured exhibit throughout the month of May. Interested
photographers may submit up to two photos that are framed and wired for hanging
(ring type hangers and tabletop framed are not accepted).
The competition is
in collaboration with AoA’s Photography Club, which is celebrating their 10 Year
Anniversary this year. The winners of the photography competition will be
announced at an opening reception at AoA during First Friday ARTWalk on May 2nd.
All participants and guest are invited to attend. The juried awards are as
follows:

The entry fee
is $30 for AoA members and $40 for non-members. Photographs will be received at
AoA between Tuesday, April 15th and Friday, April 25th during regular gallery
hours of 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. Late entries and incorrectly or unlabeled works
will not be accepted.

: The Sounds of the 70's

Are you ready for
“8-Track”? Encore
Theatre Company is rehearsing now for this 70's musical review with a bit of
drama! Talented Elizabeth City thespians are putting the polishing touches on
this toe-tapping, smile-inducing show that will have you dancing and singing
along. Mark you calendar. Shows are coming up April 25- 26 and May 1-3 at 7:30
p.m., with a matinee April 27 at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale at Arts of the
Albemarle’s Maguire Theatre for $16 each. The cast includes Dale Brandt
(tenor), Joel Taylor (baritone), Lauren Luther (soprano) and Pearl Kelly-Goss
(alto). The show is directed by Erin Garrett, musically directed by Steve
Raisor and choreographed by Velda Jones.
Put on your
leisure suits, halter tops and platform shoes and get ready to boogie down
through 10 years of ground-breaking music! With its propulsive rhythms and
dazzling harmonies, “8-Track” is a fast-paced musical romp through one of the
most impassioned decades of the 20th century. This Baby Boomers’ dream come true
features the music of The Emotions, The Carpenters, Labelle, Barry Manilow,
Marvin Gaye, The Doobie Brothers, The Bee Gees, Helen Reddy, K.C. and the
Sunshine Band and many more. Rediscover the heart and soul of the 70s with this
joyously rousing, moving and often downright hilarious musical in concert!
