A packed house gathered at Arts of the Albemarle during First Friday's ArtWalk last week to view this year's entries for the AoA Photography Competition.  The juror, photographer and professor of art Tom Siegmund, had a tough decision—and what he considered a true testiment to amount of artistic talent in northeast NC. Here's a look at who took the win this year, complete with Tom's notes.  To view the winning photos, as well as all entries, stopy by AoA during the month of May.

FIRST PLACE
"Stormy Farm I" by Tom BrennanSTORMY
This photograph is well-composed and well-crafted!  This image possesses a beautiful tonal range rich with texture and full of amazing detail. The narrative is an easy one to connect with. Evidence of the aftermath of a storm or perhaps just a break. This farm has seen many of these storms and is still standing. The beautifully rendered sky shot under this amazing lighting conditions helps to bring more tension to the scene.

SECOND PLACE
"Still Life with Small Bowl and Candle" by Steve Lautermilch
STILL LIFE

This photograph is fun to look at. This image speaks to both painting and photography. Rich with color, reflections, scattered light and exquisite photographic detail. The objects in the scene swim in this wonderful, delicate and dreamy lighting. The composition is simply elegant .The subject is still life which was a very popular subject for painters long before the birth of photography. I think the simplicity and shear elegance of this photograph takes me back to those times.

THIRD PLACE"The Lady of the Lake" by Darlene Tighe
LADY
The photograph is non-representational, abstract and full of energy. The subject is not only reminiscent of both early and contemporary painting, but also of early photography when shortly after the birth of photography in an attempt to be taken more seriously as an art form photographers looked to painting for their inspiration. This image is full of energy as these organic shapes shift and move, blend and morph into one another. I like photographs that make me work, and allow me to bring something to the table and although the title helps direct the viewer, it is not necessary. Abstract imagery can be what ever we want it to be.

Infuse your inner muse with a shot of vibrant color and motion with visiting artist Susan Tobey White. White’s visit begins with a Demo Day on March 10. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., join us in the McGuire Theater at Arts of the Albemarle for a lively and informative demonstration. Cost for the demo is free for members, $10 for non-members. It will also be offered free of cost to those who sign up for the workshop. RSVP for the demo by calling 252.338.6455!

Beginning March 11, White will conduct a three-day acrylic workshop, “No Boundaries,” that will include instruction, demonstration and a chance to express yourself in vivid color. A former elementary art teacher from Belfast, Maine, White’s work is strongly influenced by the colors and symbols of children’s art.

Her colorful and expressive series, “Dancing the Night Away,” invokes a feeling of nostalgia with scenes of impassioned dancers in crowded halls. As an instructor, White moves her students through exercises that stimulate and inspire. The workshop takes place March 11-13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. It will be held in the AOA’s Twiford Room. The cost is $295. A box lunch will be served. Participants are invited to “Wine on the River” after the first day of painting, at the home of Joe and Carolyn Peel. Held from 5 to 6:30 p.m., this soiree will be an opportunity to mingle with the artist and your fellow participants. On March 13, a mini exhibit of White’s work and an opening reception will be held at the Arts of the Albemarle’s 516 Gallery. To sign up, or for more information, call (252) 335-6877. The Center at Arts of the Albemarle, is located at 516 E. Main Street.

Arts of the Albemarle is excited to partner with the Food Bank of the Albemarle for their upcoming event, Empty Bowls of the Albemarle.  Based on an international grassroots effort to fight hunger, the Food Bank of the Albemarle is excited to bring this event to the Elizabeth City community and add it to their list of annual fundraisers.

The lunchtime event will take place at AoA on Wednesday, March 19th, from 11am - 2pm in the Maguire Theater and Twiford Room.  Lunch will include a choice of homemade soup donated by local restaurants including Montero's, Cypress Creek, Island Breeze, Currituck BBQ, and Morrison's Cafeteria, as well as salad, dessert and a drink.

peelAfter lunch, attendees will pick out a handmade bowl to take home as a reminder of the empty bowls across our region. Several months ago, local art instructors including John Peel and Mary Ann Mason invited Food Bank representatives to speak to their art classes and explain the work they do, and their vision for the event.  Students were inspired to be a part of such a worthy cause, and have been hard a work creating over 300 bowls for the event.  Stop by AoA for a sneak peak of several available bowls, which are showcased as part of the 3-Dimensional display in the 516 Gallery.

Advance tickets are $15 and are available at AoA or by calling 252.338.6455; the day-of cost of admission will be $20.  Guests may dine in or carry out.  Tickets will also be on sale during First Friday ArtWalk this Friday!
